My girlfriend gave me her sister's laptop to try and fix, which is an old Sony Vaio, looks like 128mb of ram, pentium III processor and just recently added windows vista (not sure on the version or even where she got if from.) The problem is, Windows will not load and upon booting, a black screen comes up right away stating:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Thats all that happens, she does not have the windows disk and no other screen comes up. There is no way to reinstall this file even if I found it. I have no choice to enter BIOS or safemode or anything like that. Is the computer completely dead, or is there some remedy for this message to get windows back up and running? Thank you,

Ryan

Your problem is that Windows Vista will NOT run on a pc with 128MB of RAM!
Recommend minimum spec for RAM for Vista is 1GB, But 2GB is preferred.
