VISTA UPGRADE

E

El Cugino

They're advertising VISTA upgrade for $99 at the stores today. I
have a Gateway P4 1.6 mhz with 512 memory and running Windows ME.

I just purchased XP home upgrade a couple of days ago and it's not
opened yet. I can take it back and get the new Vista.

1. Is my system ok to put on Vista... memory and cpu etc.

2, Does the upgrade have to be put on top of ME, or can I just
reformat and and will vista go on new?

Thanks for lots of feedback.

Download and run the Vista Upgrade Advisor......(but don't take it TOO
seriously, I've heard...)

Considering your machine specs...I'd just stay with XP...
it should run fine.
Besides XP is a proven operating system and the bugs have been worked out.

Vista is still new and is bound to have bugs in it.

I advise you to backup any data you need...
boot with your XP cd and perform a fresh install of XP.

Install a virus checker and your applications and you should be all set.

First off, there are a number of Vista newsgroups available on
the Microsoft news server. You might want to post your question
to one of them. Here are just a couple.

Vista General Newsgroup
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

Vista Installation Newsgroup

Since Gordon has already pointed you towards the Vista Upgrade
advisor the only thing I'll pass along is that while your
hardware might satisfy the minimum requirements you should
consider installing more RAM so that you have at least 1 GB. My
personal opinion is that anyone with a system that's more than
a few years old should stay with XP.

Next issue, I don't believe there is a direct upgrade path from
Windows ME to Windows Vista. You'd need a full version.

If you're determined to upgrade to Vista you might want to hang
on to that XP upgrade you recently purchased. Your purchase
should qualify for a "free" upgrade copy of Vista Home Basic
through the Technology Guarantee program. It will end up
costing you $10.49 for shipping and handling. You would need to
upgrade to XP before installing the Vista upgrade.Take a look
at this web site for more info.

Good luck

If you browse GOOGLE before you buy, it would become painfully obvious that
your current hardware would be woefully inadequate to run Vista. Especially
if you want to use the biggest, single selling point... AEROGLASS.

Given your system specs - I would recommend (either way) you upgrade to 1GB
memory.

Given your system specs and the newness of Vista (and the fact you are
asking and just now upgrading anyway) - I would stick with Windows XP.

That's presumably Vista Home Basic, the lowest of the five Vista versions.

a. 512MB is on the low side. It *might* be OK for Home Basic, but my Vista
experience is with Vista Ultimate with considerably more RAM, and I'm not
sure.

b. You can *not* upgrade from Me to Vista (any version). A clean
installation is required.

2, Does the upgrade have to be put on top of ME, or can I just

There's no "or" here. The answer to both those questions is "no." You can
not upgrade from Me, and you can not do a clean installation with an Upgrade
version (it doesn't work the way it did in Windows XP).

There's info about supported upgrade paths here:

Note that Aero is available in all Vista versions *except* Home Basic, the
one he is almost certainly seeing advertised for $99. So that's not an
option for him anyway.

Does his system meet the MINIMUM requirement for Vista... any version?

No. You need more RAM

Completely new install. ME becomes history.
