Slow internet

Windowsxp on this machine 2988Mbsec
Windows Vista on this machine 4890
Modem provisioned for 5 Mhz.
WHY?
I certainly don't expect to see this huge difference. Same programs
installed, the Vista was a simple upgrade form the XP setup.

On my other machine which is a Much slower processor and 512 megs as
against 2 gigs of memory it runs at the 4890 rate with XP. Vista has
not been tested on that machine and never will be :)

I will try. HP support was useless on this as was Charter. Not a surprise as this is a myterious problem. I would just switch to myVista image except too manythings like two sided print, Itunes, among the most needed just do not work correctly
I am doing a system recovery to get back factory settings to ses if speed is okin the original configuration.
Obviously the hardware is not the problem.

How to do that without the tool you point at or is the tool free? No chan e to check yet. The original configuration did give me the 5 meg a dam now restoringmyXP image. If your suggestion fails it is going to be hard to find the problem. I have added a LOT of applications. Avg Anti virus and Zone Alarlm have been eliminated as the cause

Tried and no change. I don't know what to do now? I guess try stopping
all programs in msconfig?

Zone Alarm 6 was the problem. It had so many programs it was checking
that it slowed it down. I removed it and now I get 4894 which is good.
I thought it was not the problem because I shut it off and it did not
help but apparently it still is doing something when shut off. Too
bad, guess I will have to be more careful now :)

It did not cause a problem until now because it was not checking as
many programs for activity.

Interesting as I use the free version of Zone Alarm and have no ill effects
that I can see as I routinely get download speeds of 6Mbs or greater.
Typical range is from about 5.4 to 6.6 Mbs from the same test site.

I think it was I had too many programs in the table?
It used to run Ok until they upgraded me to 5mbit speed.
I did not try emoving some The interface only allows one remove at a time and Ihad hundreds. Some where duplicates caused when programs were updated. I used the free version.
A firewall is actually superfluous if you have and use a good Anti Virus, Spyware scanner and never open unknown files,

I disagree about the need for a firewall, remember that windows has about
8000 ports, some of which are used by various apps, others (most ports) are
open (without a firewall) and just waiting for a hacker.

Also keep in mind that the best AV software is a defensive action, that
means the AV vendor must know about a new virus out there before they can
make an update available, that time lag leaves you venerable until the
update to the AV software is made available. Not to mean that a firewall
would help necessarily as the two (AV & Firewall) are designed to work
together.

In any case I'm glad you identified the problem.

My router is myfirewall. That is all I need as they can't see those ports.

Sorry to tell you mate - it just is not enough. I used to think so and now and
again I get someone knocking on the firewall - zonealarm tell me so.

To avoid grizzlies, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game
advises hikers to wear noisy little bells on clothes and carry pepper spray,
also watch for signs of activity:
Black bear scat is smaller and contains berries; grizzly scat has little bells
in it and smells like pepper.
