I have MS Word for XP. How can I convert a Vista word document, with
extension .docx, into XP MS Word with .doc extension. The .docx document was
received in an email address and downloaded.

That has nothing to do with Windows XP or Vista.

What you have (you stated) is Microsoft Word XP (2002).
What you have been sent is a document created in Microsoft Word 2007.

Your choices are:

(1)
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007
File Formats
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

"By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000,
Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit, and save files
using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007."

(2)
Word Viewer
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...88-7CFA-457A-9AEC-F4F827F20CAC&DisplayLang=en

"With Word Viewer and the Compatibility Pack, you can view, print, and copy
document contents to another program. However, you cannot edit an open
document, save a document, or create a new document. This download is a
replacement for Word Viewer 2003 and all previous Word Viewer versions."

Since (2) still requires (1) to be able to do what you want - I would go
with just (1) given you have Office XP (2002) already installed.

There is a third choice... You are now seven years behind (two versions at
this point) in your Microsoft Office applications - you could upgrade to
Office 2007. I don't see that as a realistic choice if you are just a home
user.

There is no such thing as a Vista Word Document.
It is to do with different versions of Office, not Operating Systems.

Please note, first of all, that this is a Word problem, not a Windows
one, and you question doesn't really belong here in a Windows XP
newsgroup. With Word problems, you are much more likely to get the
help you are looking for if you would ask in a Word newsgroup.

That said, there are essentially two solutions to your problem.

1. Ask the sender to send you a .doc file instead of a .docx file.
Although the sender is using Word 2007, where the default is .docx, he
can choose "Save as," and generate a .doc file instead.

2. Go to

or http://tinyurl.com/y5a879
and install the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel,
and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats"

And THAT is the best solution. I was going to mention that. :)

IOW, it's yet another attempt by M$ to force users to shell out a couple of
hundred for an upgrade with no real added benefit except to M$'s coffers. :(
