Opening .docx files with Word 2003

I went to the Control Panel, added .docx as a new extension, and assigned
Word as the program to open documents with this extension. It still doesn't
work. What am I missing?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4344 running Windows XP and Office 2003.

The .docx extension refers to a file with Word 2007 additions. There is
more to reading such a file with Word 2003 than just changing the extension.
I seem to remember an MS viewer which overcomes this situation.

Check-in at Office Update and install Office (2007) Compatibility Pack (SP1)
and other required updates:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/maincatalog.aspx

Alternately, flip your default update source from Windows Update to
Microsoft Update.

You need the MS Office 2007 Compatibility Pack, SP1 & then the updates:
