Vista takes a breather - vista latencey issues

I have upgraded to vista home premium version. I installed it on the PC which
is an AMD 3500+ (2GHz) and 1 GB of RAM. 250GB SATA HDD. I noticed that there
would be long periods when the new egg timer would be going and I could do
anything on the machine then after a minute or two it would try and do all
the things I'd asked it while it was having a break.

So I bought another GB of RAM as I noticed that the RAM monitor was showing
30-45% usage just in desktop mode!!

After the extra RAM was added the RAM monitor showed a lower percentage
being used but I am still getting the long pauses. This makes playing any
games impossible

All I have done with it so far is browse the web and answer e mails. Is
there anyway performance can be improved without having to buy a Cray
Supercomputer?

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Frank,
I had a similar problem on my Intel-based Dell XPS 410..every so often the
entire system would freeze for 5-10 seconds--no activity---then would play
"catch up" and respond to any input I had done during the "pauses". I
checked the Event Viewer and saw many errors for iastor.sys, This led me to
believe there was something going on with the SATA/RAID storage controller
(I had used the most current files for Vista from Intel). I updated these
files again, did a couple Vista reinstallations and STILL had the problem.
Then I remembered hearing about XP issues with hardware DEP, so I checked my
machine's BIOS (I was running the most current Vista-compatible BIOS
available) and sure enough hardware DEP was turned on. I turned it off and
rebooted the system. Presto! No more lockups...it's unfortunate because
hardware DEP is a very good thing and I hate to have to disable it just to
get Vista to run. Overall, I think Vista has too many small bugs/annoyances
and incompatibilities at this time, along with a shortage of drivers
(hello?...device manufacturers have had FIVE years to get ready for Vista...I
don't get why there aren't drivers for practically everything). I've since
restored XP MCE 2005 back on my system for a few more months...

I realize that you have an AMD system, but the same principles apply, even
if the drivers and storage systems have different names. Might be worth
looking at.

Open Reliability and Performance Monitor. Look at the CPU and Disk sections
in the right pane to see what is using resources and accessing the drive
during the latency periods. Look in Event Viewer for errors.

I had the same problem. It turned out to be a hardware driver conflict.
Before I had a chance to troubleshoot the problem my mother failed. I now
have another motherboard but at least everything is stable.
