numerous vista 'issues'

T

themesh

I've just made the move from XP SP3 to Vista Ultimate 64 bit and a
currently having numerous issues.

My system is -

8800 GT
E2160 @ 1.8
2 gig ram (800)
p35 ds3
ASUS VW222 22 (1680 x 1050)

Issues I'm having -

- Cpu usage is spiking from 5% - 30% whilst I'm doing basic deskto
tasks.
- When close Opera to go back to the desktop the gadgets are taking
while to load.

Possible fixes/Questions

- Do I need to install video drivers? I was told that Vista aut
detects and installs drivers.
- Do I need to install motherboard drivers?

Thanks for any help or suggestions

Vista auto installs drivers if it knows about them. It is not a bad idea to
check with manufacturer websites to get latest drivers.

Do this for your video card AND motherboard

Open task Manager (CTRL-SHIFT-ESC)

Click on the PROCESSES tab

Click on the CPU heading (this will gather the most active processes to one
end) - you should be able to see what is spiking..

The Opera issue could be down to video drivers..

Hi,
- Do I need to install video drivers? I was told that Vista auto
detects and installs drivers.

It does, but only installs basic functionality drivers. You should get the
most recent release from the card manufacturer and install them.
- Do I need to install motherboard drivers?

Absolutely. Again, Vista may natively support the hardware, but it's nearly
always best to use manufacturer-supplied drivers.

On Opera, you may want to check for x64 version compatibility as the
behavior you are describing indicates that it's interfering with the shell
functions.

- Cpu usage is spiking from 5% - 30% whilst I'm doing basic desktop

Check in Opera the next setting:
Tools/Preferences/Advanced/History "Memory Cache"

If it's "Auto" (and it is by default), change it for something else (say 10MB).
It could cure both of the problems.

(if not, try to turn off indexing of your disks)
