Windows Vista Vista Shuts Down Every Night !!?

I went on holiday and left the house and computer in the “capable” hands of my daughters. When I returned the printer will not work, I can’t send email (now resolved) and every morning I awake to find the PC has switched itself off. This latter problem is really annoying me as the BOINC programme also shuts down and any ongoing tasks “error out” and are completely lost. Fortunately, the house survived without any mishaps.:)

I’ve been into Vista Power Options and checked my Custom Settings which are exactly as they were when set up in November (using Mucks’ article).

Any ideas as to what I can do to prevent this switch off every night?

This is only a thought Niv, but do you think they could have downloaded something "useful" whilst you were absent? Such as this auto-shutdown Vista Gadget for instance? HERE or if not this, I see that there are loads of other bits of software which also allow one to do much the same thing.

Welcome home btw, hope you had a great holiday

Hmmm, dunno how 'responsible' your daughter is, but, I can't see where Vista can do such a thing without being told to.

Oh, there is one exception ... Vista WILL reboot, and I emphasise re-boot, if necessary, after any update that needs the system to do so.

I cannot find any reason for Vista to shutdown on a regular bases otherwise.

You can run a HJT log by me, I'll take a looksee if anything is obvious. :thumb:

Thanks Mucks. My daughters are very responsible and I' sure that they have not done anything that they shouldn't. I'm not really blaming them - it's more a bit of a joke.

Here is the HJT log

One other thing I was thinking of posting was the fact that over the last 8-9 weeks the automatic updates from Microsoft have almost all failed. In fact only 4 out of the last 105 have been successful and none at all over the last 5-6 days. Some have tried day after day but not made it. I checked on the PCR search but got nowhere and even went through the MS troubleshooting guide again with no luck. I am awaiting an email reply from MS about the problem - they quote 24 hours for a reply. The MS forums suggest that this is not uncommon but I have not found an answer there either. Many of the posts suggest various links but they tend to go round in circles and are not very helpful.

Do you think there may be some connection between the failure of updates and the first problem?

I don't rule out any 'anomalies' where computers are concerned. ;)

I have also read a few people have had severe problems updating Vista ... I have had the odd one or two but put it down to server load as I can usually download/update them later, even though, one took 3 days to get.

I cannot "see" any nasties, though I would like to get me hands on your PC and get rid of some programs. :p

I would get HJT to fix : ...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zzzHPSETUP] E:\Setup.exe

I dunno what it is, therefore I would 'fix' it. ;) https://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/setup.exe/zzzhpsetup.php

Also ...
Nobody needs Adobe Acrobat reader when Foxit is available ... does a better job all round and is not open to any vulnerabilities associated with Adobe.

I don't actually recommend SpybotSearch&Destroy with Vista, especially the TeaTimer thingies, it's a bloody nuisance, my personal opinion. :thumb:

I just remembered this is a Dell PC ... I am tempted to tell you to go get "Decrapifier" and get rid of the junk programs (trials & other crap) off you PC. ;)

Also, things like that HP printers install unnecessary bits-n-bobs like ...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\Photosmart\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
Not dangerous, but unnecessary. HP software updates. If a shortcut doesn't exist, oh wow, but why is it running ALL the time.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon] C:\Program Files\HP\Photosmart\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe
Not dangerous, but again, unnecessary. "HPs exclusive Share-to-Web software makes it easy to share content with others through our affiliate Internet websites." In other words an application that allows users to upload scanned images to their personal webpages if desired. Available via Start / Programs ... I don't need these thing running. ;)

O4 - Global Startup: HP Digital Imaging Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\HP\Photosmart\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe
Not dangerous, but once again, unnecessary. HP digital imaging monitor; it can be launched manually. If you need it. ;)

Oh, and I would uninstall HP's download manager. Maybe in conflict with Vista's download, I dunno, but I don't like download managers. :thumb:

You could try an experiment for me ... disable/turn off your AV & Firewall and go try Windows Update ... I do not recommend anybody try this at home, but I'm clutching at straws now. :D

Thanks once more, Mucks.

I've been doing some digging. The problem arises at about 3AM every morning, which is the EXACT time I get the automatic updates (which usually fail to be installed). I have therefore switched off the automatic updates and have requested to be informed when they are available so that I can install at my leisure. I have so far installed two of them manually with no problems.

I hope this will solve the problem.

One other thing, Mucks,HJT will not fix the items you suggest.

Also some of the manual downloads are successful but some are not.

Sorry, I was only saying to 'fix' the one item with HJT, that was ...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zzzHPSETUP] E:\Setup.exe

... with the HP lot I should have said to have a look at its software and turn off the "features" you didn't need.

As for the bad downloads, looks like you are in a category that others seem to have. Unless you, or MS, can narrow down that problem I dunno what to suggest.

Even that, on its own, refuses to be "fixed" by HJT.

I've noticed before that sometimes after uninstalling a programme small bits seem to get left behind and no amount of trying to delete makes any difference. They just sit there and cause great annoyance.
icon9.gif

Is there any sure fire way of getting rid of these remnants?

As to the bad downloads, I've managed to get some onto the system by downloading manually instead of automatically, but some still refuse to be downloaded at all. I've got MS involved now and am hoping they can help.
