Vista Program Compatabilities

I have been advised by Microsoft's Vista Upgrade that the following might
have combatability problems once Vista has been installed. Can anyone advise
- help! I have tried so-called support websites till I'm blue in the face.

WinZip 9, PartitionMagic 8, Microsoft IntelliType Pro 5, J2SE Runtime
Environment 5 Update, Windows Messenger, Microsoft ActiveSync 4 and ATI
Catalyst Control Center. Also hardware:- USB Digital-TV Receiver, Gigabyte
GBB36X Controller, Intel ICHS Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 283A,
2836, 2835,3834, 2832.

The following may help - These programs must be uninstalled before upgrading
to Vista and then reinstalled. Norton Systemworks 2005, Norton AntiVirus and
Norton Ghost 9.

Any software/programs/drivers that are listed remove before you upgrade.

Any suspect hardware that you can remove - do so.

Any hardware that you can not remove - get the requisite drivers before hand
and have them ready for installation.

Prepare properly or suffer the consequences. Praying that the advisor is
wrong is not wise.

In addition, remove any antivirus programs, firewall programs, anti spyware
programs etc. Vista compatible versions can be installed after you have
upgraded.

First and foremost you'll want to get rid of all Norton Home products.
Not an easy thing to get off a PC Cleanly.

WinZip 9 isn't really necessary in Vista, it has it's own native 'Zip'

Partition Magic 8 isn't compatible in the Windows environment. Best
to create the Bootable media (CD-R) for "Emergencies" but I'd go
ahead and leave PQMagic behind. It's best days are behind it.

Active Sync is replaced by Windows Mobile Device Center software.
Uninstall ActiveSync before attempting an upgrade.

ATI has Vista drivers and control - uninstall the XP version.

Intel Chipsets with the ICH8 (S?:) are natively supported by Vista.

You're faced with some significant "Prep" work. I'd recommend you
take a Ghost Image of your XP setup before starting. This way if an
incompatible item gets past you on your first attempt - you can restore
to XP and try again.

A clean install, which you can do with an upgrade disk, is the key to
getting things to work well. If you don't want to do a clean install, at
least make a new profile for yourself. Beforehand, uninstall as much as you
can. As an example, delete all old versions of Java before your upgrade and
install the current Java 1.6 or higher. A program that doesn't install
under Vista will probably not uninstall either, typically leaving you stuck
with a troublesome old version.

More to the point, it works better than it did in XP! If you are
using the two-pane Explorer view and you browse into a .ZIP, it no
longer pops up a new one-pane "open" window.

Unistall Sun Java JRE before doing the update, then download and
install Sun Java JRE 1.6 (replaces the 1.5.xx series).

I have been unable to get any norton programs to work with vista and I did
just as you said, but they will not reinstall after vista is loaded.

I have run the public beta of Norton 360 under VISTA with no problems
and I have removed it and installed the current version of Norton
Internet Security 2007 under VISTA and it runs with no problems.

Did you use the Norton Removal tool to remove any traces of a previous
or failed attempt to install whichever Norton programs you mean?

Did you download the current VISTA compatible versions from the Norton
site and install them using the KEY to your unexpired previous version?

Not quite the same thing as:
I was referencing only 2006 abd earlier versions of system works.

If you really want System Works then I'd go for the new Norton 360
since you could call it SystemWorks on steroids -- but frankly it
duplicates so many things that are in VISTA I decided not to bother.

If you have unexpired time on Norton AntiVIrus or Internet Security you
can download the VISTA compatible versions and install them using the
2006 key to use up the rest of your unexpired time.
