Vista POP3 Major Problem - Help MS

Hi,
We are having a major problem with POP3 in Vista. We are an ISP.
Vista does not download mail using pop3 if there are large mails or
attachments. Vista just states the server has timed out, we have tried
increasing the timeout value also.
We have installed a brand new installation of vista (with no anti-virus
software, firewall disabled etc).
When we try to download mail using pop3 (windows mail, outlook 2003,
thunderbird) from our mail server it just times out, if there is a mail with
an attachment or large email in the inbox.
I've tried using RAW telnet commands to connect and it just hangs when you
try to retrieve a message with attachments or large emails.
Every other OS/mail client combination works fine with our mail platform.
I have checked our external firewalls and cannot see any strange errors or
port usage. Just shows as pop3 connecting, the firewall isn't blocking
anything.
This is obviously a problem with Vista and how MS have used the pop3 code,
have they followed the RFC!!?
MS need to fix this but I can't find anything on their site about, but
plenty of people are having this problem.

This is extremely frustrating as our customers are starting to use Vista and
we cannot do anything to help them!!

They assume it is our fault, which it is not.

If anyone has a fix or suggestions please can you share them.

Many Thanks

Matt

What size emails and what size attachments? Note they are handled
differently in POP3.

I've done some almost 10MB and had no problems. But could do a few more of
larger sizes for you and check.

Hi Mar,
Found a fix in another post I started.

Need to run:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

This fixes the problem...good old MS for changing things that worked!!

Hi,

I also switched to Windows Vista recently and since then I've problem
downloading mail off the POP3 server of my DSL internet provider (Tiscali in
Italy). Whenever I open Windows Mail, the client can correctly detect the
number of new messages available on my POP3 account but then it will be
unable to download them and display only a time-out error notice.
Now... I've just read the solution here below, but it's not clear if this
command shoud be run by me on my workstation, or of it should be used by the
internet provider in order to adjust the configuration of their servers so to
eliminate compatibility issues with clients running under Windows Vista.

Please clarify... it could be the solution to all my problems!!! I was
almost going to rol back to Windows XP!

Thank you very much in advance,
Marco

Matt & Steve Cockran, you mentioned to this person who is having problems
with their MS Outlook (timing out when checking mail IN/OUT)
you told them to:
Need to run:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

Please help me as I don't quite understand where I am to run that?

Thanks, Rebecca

Well Guys.... I've been working on this 'timing out' email problem for 3
days. I've done EVERYTHING to figure it out. Nothing seems to work that I've
tried. Even the mail program that comes with VISTA times out. Just ONCE I've
rec'd mail in the VISTA mail, and every single time thereafter, it TIMES OUT.
Any new suggestions?

Run a command prompt as Administrator and paste this into the box:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

This also will help... I know to reboot... but... I needed to have the
command prompt in a different mode...

So I’ve been using Vista for a few weeks now and for whatever crazy reason I
decided I needed to flush dns. I received this message: “The requested
operation requires elevationâ€. Okay, to get around this go to All Programs,
Accessories, right click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator. Good
to go!
