Does it really look that much different?

Or even with Aero look if you so prefer..

But I doubt aero can do this...

Looks of the apps? No. The actual OS and how it works, yes.

That looks like ass!

I have no need for that

I have no need for that

I think Apple did this best. One click and you see everything. Screw this
carousal/cube crap!

Well we finally agree on something!!! I knew there was a reason why I don't
normally run the Aero theme. =)

I have no need for that

I said the same thing actually at first. I said...neat..but..useful?

Then the other day, I needed to look at a window behind my full screen
window....so I just peeled my window aside and looked at it. =)

Quite useful!

I can do that too actually. All I need to do is move my mouse pointer to the
very upper right corner of my desktop and all windows get shown on my
screen and I can switch to whatever window I want. I could tie it to a key
too if I wanted to which I might actually do.

It's hard to hit the corner up there with a dual-screen desktop as the mouse
wants to move to the other desktop. =)

Of course not! XP -> Linux is a move from a toy operating system to a real
operating system. The move from XP -> Vista is a move from an old toy
operating system to a newer toy operating system with eye-candy, if one has
the hardware to even run this eye-candy.

In short, Ubuntu+Beryl == The Real "Wow".

....running on hardware that doesn't require spending hundreds of dollars to
get running.

Cheers.

No key. Mouse button. Then I want to select the window I want with the
mouse (mouseover) then release the button to get that window brought up
front.

We BEGGED for this during the beta.

Could do it with mouse button too if I want to. Entirely up to me.
Personally I'd prefer a key combination though. I have a 5 button mouse and
I occasionally bump into keys 4 and 5, 5 particularly, on accident if I am
in a hurry switching my hand from keyboard to mouse.

Drives me nuts on IE actually because it binds keys 4 and 5 to forward /
back. You don't even wanna know how many times I've accidentally
gone "back" from a form when I didn't want to.

While I have gotten better about it in the meantime, for that reason I try
not to have and bindings to those two particular mouse buttons.

I could do a key + mouse button thing but...at that point in time though it
just makes more sense to stick to a key combination, preferably a left hand
combination.

Then once its triggered, I just click on the window I want with the mouse.

And I take it by your earlier comment that Apple did it best, it never made
it into Vista?

I can't imagine anyone who has any need for eye candy, be it this or
areo or flip3d, etc.

Yes, you make sense -- wait a year or so.

However, I'm thinking of NEW FUNCTIONS...

Things I can do with Vista that I can't do with XP Pro SP2.

Everything I've seen and heard so far is just cosmetic -- no real FUNCTIONAL
upgrade.

But I'm still open to suggestions -- none have been offered.

I realize the next box I buy will have Vista.

I usually buy top of the line stuff for $4,000 or so -- and then keep it for
a while -- not act like a barking dog running after a garbage truck -- which
is what SOME early adopters act like.

Cheers,

DSH

Instant Search. Being able to search files and email, all with the same
search, one keystroke at a time. As well as network files.

Fun stuff!

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/details/instantsearch.mspx

You can come close with Windows Desktop Search on XP but then again, that
app is garbage. Especially when it comes to a large amount of files.

Being able to resize thumbnails and look inside documents (explorer). This
has made a few people at my place of work MUCH MORE productive as well as
myself.

Need more?

Don't need Vista for that. =) Kubuntu has the same feature, well almost.
It shows a preview of the file contents (at least if possible) for the
thumbnail and you can get a larger and resizable preview of it via the
context menu.

Can't resize it inside the explorer, at least not that I am aware of.

Though honestly Justin, I think your needs might be a little uncommon
dontcha think? Don't know what your company does but I've yet to find
myself in a situation, or know someone in the situation, that they need to
search for files so much that the time it takes is of any actual
consequence in the long run.

Maybe in the business you are in though it is a very important thing. Don't
know. =)

We're talking about XP versus Vista. Linux is not a part of the convo...not
yet ;p

It's not just about files. It's about files, files inside emails, files
inside zipped files, tens of thousands of files or not knowing if the info
you need is in a file or in an email.

I have one machine that houses all our EDI data. It maintains the original
TXT files that are received and sent. It archives anything older then 90
days into zip files. To date it has over 350,000 files. When I tell Win03
to search this massive structure it can take up to 6 minutes to give me
results. Sometimes, those results are empty. Oops, gotta do it again!
I've been syncing these files to a Vista machine where I can search
instantly.

Although I've had to learn to PASTE my search into the field all at once.
Doing it one character at a time was slowing it down.

I'll admit that is not a bad feature if you have use for it. You most
certainly do it seems. =)

Ahh, MS trying to save a button by not requiring you to click one and
instead starting the search on every textbox update?
