Vista install hangs

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get Vista Home Premium (64 bit) full version to install on my
machine which was built recently. It already has XP Home on one hdd. I want
to leave XP as is and install vista on the second drive giving a dual-boot
system.

I boot from the DVD, it goes through the screen that says "windows is
loading files" then changes to the black screen with the green scrolling bars
and goes no further.

PC spec:

MSI K9N Platinum (MS-7250)
Athlon 64x2 5000+
Antec smart power 500 watt
Crucial DDR2 PC2 5300 2x1gb
XFX GeForce 7300GT 512mb (PCI-E)
Western Digital WD5000KS )both
Western Digital WD2500KS )SATA 2
NEC ND3550A
Mitsumi FA404

I've tried unplugging all the peripherals leaving only keyboard, mouse and
speakers connected.
I've also tried swapping the DVD writer with an AD-7170A
Tried warm booting, cold booting, leaving running at hang point for an hour.

So far no good. Can anyone shed any light on this. I've seen this issue on a
few forums but no real answers.
I ran Vista upgrade advisor on the machine and the only thing it picked up
on was the realtec sound drivers.

TIA

I to have the same problem and the 3 things that stand out are the MSI
board ( mine is a MSI K9N Ultra and I have an identical graphics card
only mine is the 256 version I also have 4200+ dual core and the
identical WD 250 gb sata 2 drive ...could this be the problem? ) Did
you get a reply about this from anyone .I have tried all different
ways to do a dual boot but it always hangs after the first reboot. It
will work in Virtual PC and I have installed dual boot on an old 1.2
Duron which works everything Aero 3d flip etc( so much for high end
machines they do not seem very compatible )Also upgrade advisor told
me the same ..What version Vista you trying to run ??

Hi Mike

Sorry no luck still with installing on my machine.

It's Vista Home Premium I'm trying to install.

I was waiting and hoping for some useful suggestions but so far I haven't
received any replies other than yours. I don't even get as far as a reboot.

You mentioned dual-booting, is that on a partitioned drive or separate
drives. I want to dual boot using separate drives.
A suggestion from my son's school IT specialist was to remove the XP drive
from the system to see if an install is possible with only one drive
connected. I haven't got round to trying yet also a bit wary because I'm
under the impression Vista's boot manager won't install doing it like that,
saw somewhere I may be unable to access the XP drive.- Correct me if I'm
wrong somebody.

I'm wondering about trying the MSI forums as we seem to have that in common.
Good luck Mike and if you come up with anything post here and I'll do the
same.

I am trying to dual boot on a single 250gb drive that has been
partitioned with partition magic I have also tried to install from an
iso using Daemon tools but this also did not cure the problem. Upgrade
advisor tells me that I should uninstall Nero 6 before I install
Vista.. What I really need to know is can progs on XP cause Vista not
to install on a dual boot even though it is on a different partition
and virtually a clean install ?I think dual booting using seperate
sata 2 drives also causes a good few problems from what I see on the
user groups..I think the only answer is to purchase a new sata 2
drive ,disconnect the one that is in the computer ,reconnect the new
one and see if you can do a fresh install of vista , this would then
let you know if it is something in xp stopping it install ( that is
providing vista installs on new drive ) Second alternative is to dual
boot another version of xp then try to upgrade that ...This all seems
a lot of messing around to try to install something that probably will
not run the software that you have at the moment..Better play around
with it on Virtual Pc and wait for all the service packs that will
most definitely be appearing very soon..
Do you by any chance have Nero 6 installed ? Only the very latest Nero
7 that you can now download is compatible with vista..
