Vista File Indexing = Incomplete results

For some reason, not all of my files are showing up in the index when I do a
search. I have indexing on at the drive and at the folder level turned on.

I know it takes a while to catalog the files, however I've let the computer
sit idle for several nights.

Any suggestions?

Hi, Rick.

What does it say in Control Panel | Indexing Options? You can choose which
drives, folders, file types, etc., get searched. You also can choose
whether to index file contents or just file names.

Are you doing just a regular search or an advanced search?

On the start menu, right click on the magnifying glass at the search line,
and click on the start menu customize button. Scroll down until you find
Search Files, and make sure the Search entire index button is pressed. Also
make sure you take ownership (file properties, advanced) of all your old
files, as a search will only return items your "user" owns. (Else you'd be
able to see files from other users on your machine, and that wouldn't be
very secure!)

RC White:

I have tried having both drives indexed in their entirety as well as the
root folders of all files. That didnt change the result. On the index
options i dont have it indexing contents.

Kurt Herman:

Search Entire Index was selected.

Under file ownership, it was set to Administrators on the ones that it wasnt
finding, i already have everything off right now so i can rebuild the index
so I'm not sure if it was searching and locating Administrators owned files,
I made sure my user is in the admin group, but I'm in the process of taking
ownership right now to see if that changes the result.

Adam Albright:

I've tried both regular and advanced.

After removing and shutting down indexing, it finds all the files i need
without a problem. I also installed the google desktop and that is doing a
good job locating the files, so it looks like I have 2 work arounds if I cant
get this to work!

I'll post back after the files get re-indexed with the new results.

Thanks!

Well, i tried all suggestions, rebuilt the index 3 times in addition to the
several times i tried prior to this.. My conclusion is that Vista File
Indexing is broken. I have incomplete search results that can be compared
with search results with indexing off as well as to google desktop search.
