Indexing and dual boot

I dual boot Vista C:\ and XP D:\ (physical drives)

I noticed today that within XP my C:\ drive had indexing turned on. As I try
to hide my Vista drive from XP (TweakUI) I turned indexing off for that C:\
drive. (from within XP my computer properties)

When I booted to Vista I discovered that indexing was now turned off for the
C:\ Vista drive. When looking at "Indexing Options" from within Vista there
are no "Included Locations" although there are 83,568 items indexed.

So question is... is this the way it works? While removing the indexing from
C:\ Vista while booted to XP there was a lot of activity while attributes
were being changed to the C:\ *.* files.

I will now turn indexing back on from within Vista as I like the quick
search results. I'm wondering if Vista will have to do a new and complete
index of its C:\ drive. Wondering about the ..... wait a minute. As I type
that 83,568 number is shrinking. Down to 78K and dropping.... I just turned
indexing back on from Vista My Computer C:\ properties. Lots of disk
activity again and message "applying attributes to ... *.*". Big number
still dropping... down to 75K. Still applying attributes.
Applying attributes is now complete but my items indexed number is still
dropping. (59K) Maybe it's time for a reboot.
I'll be back.

I rebooted to Vista and items indexed number is still dropping. I do have
the Included Locations back and they include the extra folders and files
that Vista does not use by default. Suppose I'll wait and see how this turns
out and then probably rebuild the index.
Live and learn.

Interesting experiment. Yep, both use the ntfs 'I' attribute

Start > cmd > attrib /?

I Not content indexed file attribute.

Dan, why are you using TweakUI to hid the Vista drive from XP? If it's to
prevent the deletion of Vista restore points when booting into XP, that
won't work.

Sorry I don't know about the indexing issue.

Way back when there was talk that hiding the Vista drive from XP (tweakUI)
might solve the restore issue. Of course it does not. But I had just left it
that way. Don't really want to mess with Vista files while in XP. I had a
one year old hard drive (my Vista C:\) physically fail and it's no fun. I
had a 3 week old Acronis backup but my dual boot was difficult to get back
to. Ended up restoring XP also and still had odd problems getting dual boot
back.

Ok, thanks. I multi boot two installations of XP with one of Vista and use
Acronis True Image version 10. I've restored the system with ATI several
times as a test and had no problems doing so. Besides hiding with TweakUI
doesn't really hide much. All it does is remove the Vista volume from My
Computer and Explorer but it can still be accessed by programs and from the
command line.

Anyway thanks for the clarification. I thought maybe you had figured out a
way to use the hide capability to not get the Vista restore points deleted.
