Vista dead slow!

Andy

DELL Dimension E520, Vista home basic 3ghz, 512mb RAM 7200 SATA disk drive.
Vista really starting up slow running slow from opening up explorer to
opening up control panel to ages shutting down would be much faster if it
was XP loaded. No viruses or spyware what else could I be looking at?

What services/standard Vista programs running in the background could I stop
or end task to help speed the PC up? Defender is not running anyway.

Cheers,

Andy.

First thing you need to do is RAM that puppy up!
Go for 2 gigs of System RAM if affordable or at least 1 gig. Then get
yourself a USB 2 flash drive (2 gig min) and use it as a Readyboost.
Then report back about the speed improvement! :-D

Your problem is the 512k RAM, it is not enough to run Vista and other
software, you need at least 1GB probably 2Gb.

Yes, silly really that DELL chose to just put 512mb in the first place mind

Particularly if your E520 uses integrated video (some do). That's stealing
from your 512mb

Standard 512mb fitted by DELL as standard on the entry level PC but I will
tell him to up the RAM.

thanks,

Install more RAM. You need at least 1 gig.

2 gig of RAM would be better.

If this computer was purchased with Vista installed, shame on Dell for
supplying so little.

Yep supplied by DELL online loaded with Vista home basic 512MB RAM as
standard - would have cost only 36.00 Euro to up to 1GB should have done
that really looking back in hindsight.

Yes, shared onboard AGP up to 128mb I think.

That shared video is a resource hog. Look around for an inexpensive video
card. It should make a huge difference.

I had a 3500 and 2 gig memory and was always hanging. In my case I moved up
to a 5200 and now works fine. I also suggest minimum of 1 gig memory, and
if you do any multi processing, you may well need to upgrade the CPU

And how are you so certain of this? Could well be malware or a trojan that
your AV hasn't caught.

Stop all Vista services, remove them, install Ubuntu. Never slows down. Just
keeps on working for you.
Cheers,

Andy.

I guess FrankieBoy is going to provide the OP with his credit card number to
pay for the enhancements required to run this bloatware? No? Figured he
wouldn't put his money where his mouth is. Now, FrankieBoy <snort>, you
sure that 2 gigs is enuf? Wouldn't 25 gigs get this p.o.s. moving even
faster?

dell puts a small partition in the hdd set for unknown reasons. reformat and
set one partition, then load oem software. all dells should be reformatted
right out of the box. you will see better preformance immediately.

Oh Doris, you've been drinking again, haven't you? Shame on you! What
will Rock say? These 'bouts" are becoming more frequent aren't they? You
know, lots of your fellow Hollywood types are doing the rehab
thing...maybe you should consider trying it too? What could it hurt? And
all that boozing just makes you look older and...oh well.

Great Andy! Ubuttoo is a wonderful diversion. Get that cube thing
flipping and it's as addictive as hell! I finally had to turn it over to
my friend who gave it to his 5 yr old son and he really likes it.
The flippin that is.
Too bad Adobe, Corel, MS or any other well known software used by a
majority of computer users won't run on it. So it's really hard to judge
just how good or how bad it really is cause you can't load it up with
meaningful, productive software to get a true test of it's strength or
weaknesses. Cause that's the real test isn't it.
And don't you find it just a bit strange that a handful of linux loser
trolls have to come into this Vista ng to try and recruit linux users?
And why aren't they in their own forum trying to help all of the totally
befuddled linux users.

Let me give you a hint...try linux and see just how long and how often
you use it after just a few days. Many new users give it up very quickly
so the need to continue to recruit new blood is always present.
