After reading all of the posts and answers, I am less enthusiastic about Vista. This is
not an MS bash, just fact. When MS got Office almost there with 2000 SP2, the next major
update was released with its share of problems. Windows XP is almost there after SP2 and
some other updates. There is no need for Vista in the next few years except for higher
profit margins. and a trickle down effect through the entire industry as when Windows XP
left many orphaned peripherals in the dust. I realize that Vista is in Beta, but there
are many aspects of it that I do not particularly care for. I also realize that MS wants
to reach the biggest base of potential customers with more wizards and a more image based
GUI to cater to the lowest common denominator of PC user. The last thing that I want is
an OS with an even more image based GUI than XP. I am a power user. The first thing that
I do with an XP system is switch to the classic Start menu, get rid of transition effects,
go back to classic folders, etc.. "Gee that's pretty" lands on dead ears here." I just
want to do whatever task, fast and efficiently. Vista, will be like chalk scratching on a
blackboard for most of us. If y'all thought that getting rid of tool tips, balloons, and
"Click here to begin" was a pain: Folks, you ain't seen nothing yet. You will be having
nightmares about the Vista wizards and the too too image driven GUI....

The jump from 9x to 2K was possibly the biggest leap in technology - When we
switched to the NT kernel. And ever since then, there has been little
actual change in the OS. 1GB of RAM and a 128+MB graphics card to run fancy
graphics, and another GB to handle the actual applications (increasingly
badly written) doesn't seem to be a good ROI for Vista. MS (as with XP)
seems to have put their maximum effort into a wow factor for enticing users
to upgrade. For instance, there must have been significant effort to create
that task manager tiled effect, wherein all windows continue to run their
animations or videos, while tiled and translucent. I don't see any
practical use of such features. There are certain XP enhancements genuinely
find useful - Such as the new start menu (heavily customized though) and
task panes. Hopefully we'll see at least a few of these usability
enhancements in Vista. Search is certainly a N/A for me - I've never needed
desktop search software since I know where everything is, and when I
on't - Which is rarely - I use Agent Ransack (no index, but fast enough
anyway).

PS: If you're a member of Bink, he's given away a code which you can use for
the next CTP download if you're chosen by MS which they claim, is likely
now - If you're interested.

Great minds think alike. : ) I have been using Agent Ransack for years, and would never
think of using the slow Windows Search For Files or Folders (even with the cute animated
GUI disabled). Like you, I know just about where everything is, and do not have a need
for a desktop search utility. I played with the Google Desktop, which is similar to the
Vista desktop. Personally, I do not want my email, images, and docs lumped together. I
have a file cabinet mentality, and believe that everything belongs in its place. My last
major Office upgrade clinched my ever being enticed to purchase something just because it
is the newest. Foolishly I purchased Office XP, when Office 2000 SP2 met all of my needs.
Since I do not have a LAN, I can find no reason for Office 2003. The only way that I will
purchase Vista is when the hardware on my current systems makes it imperative to purchase
a new system, which will have Vista for the OS.
