Had a go at windows vista today.

I do not like it at all.

One you need high end pc to get the best from it.

Alot of schools will lose out on this.

Alot of my programs did,nt work under windows vista.

The layout is good but hard to use.

They still have System Restore on there, 3 new windows games,Windows media player.

Alot of drivers do not work at all and it was hard finding a virus checker for vista.

Disk Defragmenter looks very poor and does,nt offer the same under xp.

Compatibility mode does offer alot more for people using old software, but try getting it to work right?

Untill the price comes right down then i will buy vista

It was 30mins before i could pick up the basic of vista.

Why would I bother to spend the money . Can it do loads of stuff that XP can't ?? Didn't think so . Ooops , yes it will . Won't it make life difficult when I want to make a copy of some music or video stuff . I think it will . So yes I'm thick , I'll spend loads of money on a new rigg so that I can run vista and make my life even more complicated and difficult . At least I'll be at the forefront of hi-tech pc-ing . Whoopie . God bless you Bill

OK, you have identified one of the major problems with Vista.
There are more:
Price. Linux is free, XP is at least reasonable.
User account control (annoying in practice but a good idea).
The need for a more powerful machine than many have for smooth operation.
The need for lots of ram in order to improve program load speeds.
Drivers that ARE out there may not work right:
Toms's Hardware. 2Feb07
http://www.tgdaily.com/2007/02/02/nvidia_lawsuit_vista_drivers/
Application incompatibilities.
DRM.
Gee, maybe in 6-9 months when some of these things are sorted out and a service pack is issued Vista may make sense. Until then, only DX10 gamers (when the games come out) need apply...
Yes it's pretty, but someone needs to explain to me why I need it.

Am sticking with windows xp

The ram vista needs is mad.

512 for the basic and 1gb for the top version.

God help people like myself using 512min ram.

We all don,t have top of the range pc bill gates.

It actually gets worse. 512MB is a practical minimum for XP. Bring up Task manager and look at memory usage in the performance tab. Total commits may only be 250-300MB when you do it, but I'll bet that peak commits exceed your available memory. Using swap files really slows things down.
Vista not only needs more memory just to run, it uses a "prefetch" routine to load anticipated activities into ram. For this to work corrrectly you need much more than 1GB. Christopherpostill has a great system for running Vista. While it should run fine on my rig (except for DX10), I just don't see the point...

The defrag tool is different because vista automatically defrags while your computer is not in use, the real registry is seperate from the "Virtual Registry" keeping you more secure. Vista is Great! give the drivers time, it is a new release btw. There are many many more things but i dont have time to talk about it. This is Microsofts most secure release ever in my opinion! I bet the registry is done away with in their next OS if they did that, except for the price issue, Windows would be better and more secure than even linux if they did that!
