Vista 64 & Sony video camera

Unable to connect my Sony DCR-PC110E video camera via it's firewire
connection to my Vista 64 machine.
Contacted Sony, who responded as follows:
" Dear Mr Shields

I am sorry to say Sony do not supply drivers for firewire connctivity, this
is done by the software vendor of the DV package or by Microsoft.
Regards
CIC - Convergence Team
Sony United Kingdom Limited"
If anybody has a suggestion that can help me, it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Thanks Freddy. Problem I have is that my ASUS motherboard has a
firewire/ieee-1394 connection built in, that worked fine on previous
versions of XP. Vista 64 & my camera just does not like it.

Hi Pete,

By not liking it, do you mean that Vista 64 has no 64 bit Firewire drivers
for the port. Does Device Manager display any indication of an error
condition for this, such as a yellow bang (!) by an item, or display an
Unknown Device, or some such indication of a problem? Have you downloaded
and installed all the updates available at the Microsoft update site? Post
back.

Did you install the utility drivers for your motherboard from the
manufacturer? Is there and entry for the IEEE1394 port in the Device
Manager?

Thanks for the quick response.
My motherboard is an ASUS A8N - SLI Premium and Device manager tells me that
the Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller on it is
working fine.

When I connect and switch on my camera to video mode, windows picks up that
it is there and attempts to find a driver for it, but isn't able to. Used to
work fine with XP Pro.

Are Sony blagging me, or do I need a driver from them or is it a Microsoft
issue?

Pete,

Usually, the manufacturer is 100% responsible for developing drivers/software
for its products. I see no chance that Microsoft will or has developed 64
bit Vista drivers for a Sony camera. You might try googling around the
Internet, but it's unlikely you'll find what you're looking for apart from
Sony.

And the response back from Sony, bit of a sad one really......

"Dear Mr Shields

I am sorry to read you are having problems with your camcorder under Windows
Vista 64bit edition

Firstly Microsoft are correct that drivers required for Sony products on
normal connections, like serial ports or USB are made by Sony, however Sony
has never supplied users with drivers for DV products, they have always been
part of the windows install.

I have included 2 images showing the camcorder in device manager for both XP
& Vista, you will see from the driver information these are supplied by
Microsoft and the date matched the OS setup files , both the Xp & Vista
machines are used for office applications and are not installed with any
software for these products.

Unfortunately Sony has no support for Windows 64 bit in Vista or XP and I am
not aware of any plans to do so, but as I have said there should be
no drivers from the camcorder manufacture required for DV products. I
would like to point out I have requested information about the Microsoft
drivers and how or if they are supplied by Sony to Microsoft to be included
in the installation.

I am sorry this will not resolve your problems but from experience of 64bit
windows, support has never been good, I deleted my xp install after a couple
of months trying to get drivers, but I see 3 years down the road there is
better support but not much.

I hope this information is of use.

Regards

Will Wilson"
