VirusScan DAT files download disaster

Went online today and as usual ran McAfee VirusScan and chose to update my
virus definition DAT files. All downloaded as normal, and, as happens from
time to time, the McAfee onscreen window advised me to reboot my computer.
Then during the startup process DOS messages appeared saying that the
SCAN.DAT, NAMES.DAT and CLEAN.DAT were either not found, missing or invalid.
The VirusScan screen display confirmed that no virus definition files exist
(actually said they dated 01/01/70!).
Anybody any clue what's happened, and how I can recover the situation?

I renewed my VirusScan DAT renewal on 27Sep 04 - expiring 17Sep05.

Thanks, Peacekeeper. Did what you suggested, but that was after I'd found
the key cause. I'd installed another harddrive and as part of setting-up,
changed the location of the folder for temporary files. VirusScan had parked
the three DAT files there and did nothing with them after it'd deleted the
original three DAT files! Restored the location of temporary files back to
C: drive and all's now well.
However I've another problem to solve regarding the operation of VirusScan
on a dual booted computer - see my other post today! (Maybe you can help?)
