virus infected external hard drive

i have a simpletech 160gb external hard drive
and i think i saved an infected file in the external hard drive
my computer says the external hard drive has malfunctioned and cannot be read. anybody have any idea on how to 1) get access to stuff inside the external hard drive and 2) how to get rid of the virus in the hard drive? thanks!
