I keep getting an e-mail from Network Associates WebShield SMTP V4.5 MR1a on
vwall1 detected virus W32/Mydoom.a@MM
in attachment readme.zip from ................. bla bla , my e-mail address
with a different name eg bob@....... or Alex@........ ect ect.

when I scan my pc I don't have any viruses, but I have received 25-30 of
these e-mails today alone?

Any help much appreciated.

If you are running a up to date anti-virus program and it did not detect the
MyDoom virus on your system, then someone you know may have gotten the
virus. I have seen MyDoom "mimic" my own personal email address on a
different computer.

Phil B;
From what I have seen in these NGs etc. the virus mentioned is most likely
contained in the attachments . Never open any attachment you are not
expecting , even from someone you know personally, without first contacting
that person to be sure they intended to send you an email with an
attachment.
Also , keep your virus protection up to date. As I understand there is
nothing you can do about these unsolicited emails , except to delete them
all as soon as they are received.
Of course you probably knew all this or you would not have posted.

One email account I have gets 20 "Paypal" notices/day telling me I
should verify my logon info.

Don't panic. Most likely someone else has a virus and it's found your email
address in their address book. Now the virus is sending out emails
pretending they come from you. Somewhere another computer has detected these
messages and is trying to reply - but the reply is coming back to you not
the infected computer. You are right to scan you computer.

Note: I guess it might be possible for an expert to work out who really does
have the virus if there are IP addresses in the response.

If using WindowsXP, there is a file abailable for download to clean the
machine. Procedure is to turn off the system restore FIRST, then run the
program. This wipes out all of your previous system restores. Afterward,
create another restore.

Most important, follow the instructions for the downloaded program. I've
only attempted to give some idea of what to expect.
