Although many virus checkers claim 100% effectiveness, I'm not sure of the
validity. Here's a recent experience.
After Norton's stopped working, I tried the EZ-Trust anti-virus, which
Microsoft arranged for users to obtain free. I had been unprotected for a
short while because of the mechanical problems with Norton's, and the
checker said my system was infected with a fairly obscure worm called
Byte.Verify. It didn't remove the worm, and the resource base described it
as relatively low risk, but difficult to remove. Hearing good words about
Grisoft from an MVP, I obtained the free version. It proclaimed my
computer virus free, so I thought EZ-Trust had scored a false positive.
Finally, I got Norton running again, it located the worm and cleanly
removed it.
