Virus Checkers

Although many virus checkers claim 100% effectiveness, I'm not sure of the
validity. Here's a recent experience.

After Norton's stopped working, I tried the EZ-Trust anti-virus, which
Microsoft arranged for users to obtain free. I had been unprotected for a
short while because of the mechanical problems with Norton's, and the
checker said my system was infected with a fairly obscure worm called
Byte.Verify. It didn't remove the worm, and the resource base described it
as relatively low risk, but difficult to remove. Hearing good words about
Grisoft from an MVP, I obtained the free version. It proclaimed my
computer virus free, so I thought EZ-Trust had scored a false positive.

Finally, I got Norton running again, it located the worm and cleanly
removed it.

I couldn't get the scanner at Panda to work. Clicking on 'Scan' got no
response. Maybe they're overloaded. (One MVP posted something about IE
missing clicks, and a registry repair to set it right, but I can't find
it. I wonder if that problem wasn't implicated.)

In at least one comparative evaluation, Panda didn't come out too well.
(See http://www.anti-virus-software-review.com/). [I also find Panda's
icon annoying. <g> I downloaded the the review rated highest, BitDefender.
I also took their online scan, which said my system is clean.

I too have Norton Anti-virus and while I consider it one of the best it
I think the best Online Scanner ist Trend Micro House Call and
the best AV Scanner today, is Kaspersky (KA 4.5) but it's very
difficult to configure, for new users.
