Virtual Machines have BIOS setup just like a physical PC. When
you start a VPC machine you'll need to press "Del" to enter BIOS
and setup the Boot Sequence ( CD, Hard Disk ).
Next you'll need to insert your OS disk in the Optical drive. When
the VPC starts it's sometimes necessary to click the text option"CD"
and click the "Use Physical Drive _". If done correctly, the optical
will spin up and begin the OS setup routine.

Typically yes ( to install & setup a VPC )

Sometimes you can download a fully pre-packaged Virtual
Machine ( Virtual Hard Disk .vhd & Virtual Machine settings .vmc ).

How are you trying to "run another operating system"?
Did you create a .vmc (virtual machine) first and then a .vhd (virtual hard
drive) to which you can install an OS on?
http://basconotw.mvps.org/vpc_create_vmc_and_vhd.htm

If yes to the above, did you install the OS on the .vhd in the .vmc? If
not:
Place your OS install disk in the CD/DVD drive.
In the VPC console Right click once on the .vmc you want to install the OS
on.
Click Start.
If the OS install disk isn't recognized and you get the same message to
select the proper boot device:
On the menu bar of the running .vmc click CD > Use Physical Drive "letter of
drive with OS install disk".
Reboot the .vmc and install the OS.

If the OS is 98/SE you will need to first format the .vhd in order to
install the OS.
If the OS is XP/Vista the drive will be formatted during install process of
the OS.

No true, there is no reason to enter the BIOS of a .vmc to set any boot
order to be able to install an OS.
Next you'll need to insert your OS disk in the Optical drive. When
the VPC starts it's sometimes necessary to click the text option"CD"
and click the "Use Physical Drive _". If done correctly, the optical
will spin up and begin the OS setup routine.

If the OS is being installed from an OS install disk, selecting CD > Use
Physical Drive is all that would be needed. Otherwise if the OS install is
an .iso image file then selecting CD > Capture ISO Image... is needed.

rebooting in virtual mode
mimics a real reboot with
your physical computer.

rebooting in virtual pc
is simply restarting the
vpc file you created.

--------------------

review the menu options
carefully.

it is a two phase process:

firstly, you will need to
create a vpc file, designate
size and location.

for example you would have
created a linux vpc with
20 gigs of space and maybe
assign 50% of you memory
to it.

afterwards you will double
click that file name in vpc
and a window will open.

secondly:

the window will mimic
a blank hard disk on
a computer.

you should see your bios
read outs, as if you were
actually booting your
physical computer.

then go to the menu and
select the option for it
to boot with the .iso
cd to initiate install or
setup.

you may have to search
and or target your cd drive
or if you downloaded an
iso file to the hard disk,
search and point to it.

what will then occur is
that the blank window will
begin producing a read out
as though your installing
the o.s.

my suggestion is to use
a freeware like ubantu.

that way if you make a
mistake you can delete
the vpc file you made and
start over with refined
settings.

try not to install windows
in vpc yet, because it
will require activation
although it will be virtualized.

Lots of info- some okay - some not okay.

Paul3200 - you must install an OS - and since the Virtual PC cannot access
applications of the host - they must also be installed. Keep in mind that
USB ports are not available in Virtual PC.

Windows Virtual PC 2007 (Beta) - (The term "Windows" separates the two
versions) - is specifically designed for Windows 7 and provides USB support
and ability to run applications from the 7 desktop and the virtual
desktop. Also designed to utilize XP mode - a pre-activated version of XP.
However Windows Virtual PC 2007 requires
virtualization processor and BIOS capability

To clarify, USB is not supported/available in Virtual PC 2007.

Correction on the name, it is Windows Virtual PC Beta, there is no 2007
included in the name of this version.
