Your pagefile is too small. Let the system manage the size of the pagefile.

Set your Virtual Memory to 1 1/2 times your RAM, in other
words, Initial will 768Mb and Maximum will be 1536Mb.
Rightclick My Computer icon on desktop>Properties>Advanced tab>
Performance Settings>Advanced tab>Virtual Memory>OK out.

XP - WNP

Do not have a lot of programs open concurrently - when you are through using
a program make sure you are "closing" it down.
In reference to"Jim's" response: do -Right click My
Computer>Properties>Advance tab>Performance settings>Advanced tab> Under
Virtual memory reading should be at least 760 mb - if not select change.

For more info check virtual memory under Help and Support.

And if the o.p. should decide to upgrade to 4 gb of RAM by what magic
mystical reason would they then require a 6 gb minimum and 12 gb
maximum for Virtual Memory?

Do you have antivirus, antispyware, and firewall installed?

If not, and if you have been on the Internet at all then your computer
may well be infested with malware of some sort. Go to
http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do their free online scan of your
system to see if there is anything untoward present on the machine.

Best thing for your Virtual Memory settings is to go into Control
Panel - System - Advanced.
Click on the Settings button in the Performance (top) section.
In the Performance Options window go to the Advanced tab and click on
the Change button in the Virtual memory (bottom) section.
In the Virtual Memory window click on the radio button for "System
Managed Size" to select it then click on the Set button (twice).
Click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

Good luck
