I have a Dell Computer with 256 meg or ram and a 40 gig hard drive. I set my
page file size to 768 meg min and 1536 meg max. I apply and reboot and I
get a message that my virtual memory is zero. If I try to change it, it
states the min of 768 and max of 1536 but says that my total page file size
for all drives is 0.

hi,

is there a need to adjust the page file size manually? 'usually' (and i use
that very lightly) windows does an alright job managing it. Does it work
fine when you set the page file back to 'system managed size'?

the other thing is if ur hardrive is partitiond your system will run better
if the page file is NOT stored on the primary boot partion

Is the hard drive partitioned? If yes how large is the partition in
which pagefile.sys is located and how much free space does the partition
have? Is pagefile.sys located in the same partition as your Windows XP?

I was getting the error message wihen my page file size was managed by
windows, that is why I t ried setting it manually. My hard drive is not
partitioned, it is one large partition.

I was wondering if this might have some effect. When I checked my user
profile, it was 1.75 gig. I delet ed all the folders and data on my desktop
and deleted all temporary internet files but that only got it down to 1.15
gig.

if you open the virtual memory settings. have a look at what the recommanded
min and max sizes are. choose the custom option and manually type those
sizes in, and click set. restart your computer and run the disk defrag
utility.

running the defrag will help to iron out any issues with the pagefile.

when u say 1.75g? are you referring to the space left on your hardrive??

I think the problem you have is you might be forgetting to press the set
button after to change the values. The set button commits these changes.
After you press this button then reboot. I had the same problem once but
then realised this and it has worked every since.

I tried the recommended settings first and it did not help. I ran defrag
when I first started having the problem. And I did hit the set button before
rebooting. I will retry the recommend settings and then click set and reboot
and then rerun defrag.

When I select the advanced tab and select settings under user profile, that
is where the size says 1.75 gig for my user profile. The other user profiles
are about 30 meg.

ok how much free space is left on your hard drive? i remember having a
simlar problem with windows 2000 once where the page file was larger then the
space available on the hard drive. I had a uick search for you on the
article that fixed my problem http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=257758 have
a readit should apply to you as well.

Just one other thing....you might need to consider...... keep working on
shrinking the size of your user profile....try deleting the files located at
c:\documents and settings\YOURUSERPROFILE\local settings\temp

that should make a difference if there is alot built up.cheers
