Virtual Memory

I'm getting this message: "System is low on virtual
memory. Windows is increasing the size of virual memory
paging file. During this process memory request for som
applications may be denied". I can barely do anything
with my system. I'm running MS XP Home Edition on a 2GB
processor, 40GB HD and 256MB of RDRAM. I have run clean
disk, defragmentor and my McAfee antt-virus software. All
of these actions were successful. This has not help. I,
also check, task manager and notice that process
Explorer.exe memory usage is: 165,789kb; Page fault is:
1,342kb; virtual memory size is: 784,468kb. This can't be
normal. The last three things that I have done was loaded
MS Visio, upgraded McAfee Virus Scan and started my fax
utility. Please provide some insight. Thanks!!

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? If you have partitioned your hard disk then how large is the partition in which your page file is located and how much free space in that partition!

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup.

4. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

McAfee products have a well-earned reputation for having a "who
dropped the anchor?" effect on the performance of a computer.

There are alternative products that are much less demanding in terms
of RAM and CPU cycles and which provide comparable results,

Check for actual page file usage, which indicates how much has been
moved from RAM to the page file, with a free utility from
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm or from
http://billsway.com/notes_public/WinXP_Tweaks/

If actual page file usage shows as 50 mb or more on a regular basis
then that is indicative of a considerable amount of paging activity
and more RAM would probably result in improved overall performance.

Good luck.
