virtual device driver failed

Here is the full error..

"An installable virtual device driver failed dll initialization"

Here are the instructions to fix it..

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers
Name: VDD
Type: REG_MULTI_SZ

Delete the value. When you re-add VDD, when the multi-string editor appears
with a blank entry. Leave the entry blank and click OK This should resolve
the problem. The problem shows up on Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems. It
can occur in Windows NT if someone (or some program) deletes the VDD value.

I clicked on VDD and found this value.. C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL
do they want me to delete that string and type REG_MULTI_SZ in it's place?
As you can see, I'm confused.. additonal detailed help appreciated.. thanks
Rainy

another .. asked me to choose between programs that I have now and programs
I don't.. I looked at the programs.. none that I recognized...it's been
known to happen that I jump over important info.. kind of why I asked here..
appreciate the response.. thanks Rainy

Hi.

Did you follow the link to Symantecs site? I did and ended upp with an
error. But I might have found what the link should have sent you to.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...80256dac00564a18?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam
But maybe you have already been to that link before?

Okay...highlight the VirtualDeviceDrivers in the regkey. Now you see the VDD
value on the right hand window, highlight that one and choose delete from
the Edit menu in the Registry editor. And now when that one is deleted you
should right-click the VirtualDeviceDrivers and select New-->Multi-String
Value. When you do that the Reg_Multi_SZ will show up on the right hand
window and now you can type VDD for the new value in there. Restart the PC
and hopefully it will be all well. Otherwise come back.

Regards...Gunilla.

thanks for the help... I did exactly as it said on that page.. and it's
fixed now.. at least I think so.. have't run the program I was running
before that since I have had to use system restore... I noticed that some of
my folders on my C drive were no longer there.. I searched for them.. and
search found them.. but I could not view them on my hard drive.. ;) I might
want to start a new thread for that and a few other problems that have
cropped up since then.. thanks Gunilla.. Rainy
