Viewing Older CD Photos with XP

I have a CD with photos of artwork that I bought several years ago from the
Metropolitan Museum. The instructions say it works with Windows 95, Windows
3.1 or later. Obviously I have "later" (much later) and I can't read it
with XP. Haven't tried it with Vista, but assume the results will be the
same. I get an error message saying "the system file is not suitable for
running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications." Is there any way to
view this CD?

Maybe it would be worth a try to download
and install the following free UDF Reader:

Free...Adaptec UDF Reader Driver 5.1.1.213

I am not clear with your question.

Can you
a) Not read any files on the CD - ie a CD problem
or
b) Not open any files you have read from the CD - a software reader
problem.

I'm pretty sure it's not a CD problem. When I insert the CD and then go
view the contents with Explore, I see all the images on the CD, but they are
grayed out. When I click on the exe file that is supposed to open all the
images, I get the error message: "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The
system file is not sulitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications." I have no trouble reading a couple of text files with
Notepad (again suggesting that the CD is OK), but I cannot open the images.

I have seen another CD like this, and never found a quick solution, so
gave up. Your best hope is to find an old 95 system.

The other option would be to try and extract the photos from the file.
Assuming they are JPEGs, then each photo starts with the string 0xff
0xd8 0xff and will end 0xff 0xd9. I double they will be on sector
boundaries so recovery software will not help.
