'view' mode (details/thums) and sort change in explorer XP

B

Brian Allen

Hey, when using windows explorer I find that the default view selected
changes. I always like my files/dir's viewed in detail mode as well as
sorted by file type. So I set up a folder like this and then in the
explorer tools=>options->view pane I selected 'apply to all folders' and it
seemed to work great for a while. Now completely randomly it seems when I
go to misc folders that I reguarily use the settings have changed. Most
typically it reverts to 'icons' or 'thumnails' . The sort by 'file' type
that I have previously had reverts to sort by name.

Is this typical behavior or is there something I can do. It's not a huge
deal just annoying. By the way Windows XP Home SP1

Thanks
Brian

By default Explorer will remember only the settings for only 400 folders.
Go to Kelly's site and apply this reg file to increase that to 8000:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 2 left hand side
Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000

or go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

download/install TweakUI, the TUI GUI is a friendlier way of changing the
folder view limit without manually digging around in your regkeys

to change # of folder views remembered with TweakUI, launch it, expand the
Explorer tree, click on Customizations, change the value with the spin
button or enter it directly (i think 8000 is out of bounds for number of
folder customizations, but don't quote me on that... ooops, too late)

however, i don't believe the 'explorer forgetting, resetting, randomly
guessing what it would like the next folder view to look like bug', has
anything to do with the max # of folder views remembered, i have tried
increasing that value, manually resetting then explicity customizing the
view for some of my most used folders, but windows will frequently decide it
prefers an alternate view and change it to something else, for no apparent
reason. this bug and many many other explorer 'features' have been around
since XP RTM

obviously fixes like these, frustrating and annoying as they are, have been
pushed down the priority ladder as microsoft scrambles to secure its
flagship OS with SP2

TweakUI's function to increase remembering settings for more than 400
folders doesn't work. It's a bug.

Francis,

Run the edit. TweakUI will not help in this matter. All will be well in
SP2.

yes, now that you mention it, i have noticed an inconsitency b/w what TUI
reports as the # of folder customizations and that of x-setup (another
popular tweak utility). i hadn't heard of that particular bug with TweakUI,
until now (there are several others i'm aware of too). thanks for
correcting me on that. so, as you say, use the regkey modification
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/bags8000.reg instead of TweakUI
to make this change.

cheers

Unfortunately it gets it wrong - use Kelly's method, which is the right
one
