Video Signal Lost During Logon & Occasional Logon that Returns to Welcome Screen

I am experiencing a problem on Windows XP SP2 machine where the video signal
will occasionally report "lost" by my monitor when a user logs on to the
machine. Typically the signal will be restored after about 10s.
Occasionally, some of the desktop will appear for a brief second, and then
the user is returned to the welcome screen where a second logon attempt will
be successful - and not result in the video signal being lost. This problem
appears to occur if the user had previously been logged in and if the user
had not been previously logged in.

I have reviewed my application and system event logs after such a problem
occurs and there are no events reported for the time period in question. My
system in running XP SP2 Professional, the machine is not a member of a
domain, and the welcome screen and fast user switching is enabled. My
machine is equipped with a Radeon X800 GTO card.

Is this a known issue with XP and multiple users being logged on? Can
anyone help me start to diagnose this problem?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Tyler

I'm guessing it is a function of a DVI connected monitor and the ATI
drivers getting "confused" with the "fast user" switching.

This sounds like the users have different graphics settings (either
resolution, or refresh rate, or both) to each other and/or to the system
default. I used to get something like this with my nVidia card on my PC
until I set all the refresh rates the same - my wife's account was set to
60Hz instead of 85Hz and so caused the desktop settings to have to be
changed when she logged in, or I logged in after she'd logged out. However,
the blank screen was only for a couple of seconds, but the ATI drivers may
take longer to make the switch.
