Video display problem

A few months ago I installed a new LG 23" widescreen monitor, with which
I have been very happy. However, recently, I have noticed that
sometimes, just occasionally, when coming out of Standby or Sleep, there
have appeared multicoloured vertical and black stripes down the
right-hand quarter of the screen, that only a shutdown and restart can
get rid of. Then it's OK for a few more days.

The system is Windows XP SP3 with an ASUS/ATI X1950 Pro video card. I'm
not sure if the fault lies with the monitor or the video drivers or what.

Any ideas?

It's probably a monitor problem. Go to there web and see if are any updates
for it.

If it looks like this, it could be an LCD panel problem. The panel is
arranged in a matrix, and a driver IC can cause this.

This page, shows a listing for LCD driver ICs, so you can see that
one chip drives a lot of lines on the panel. Multiple chips are
needed to drive the whole LCD panel display.

It's funny though, that a restart would fix it.

You could try testing the monitor on another computer.

When video cards fail, you can see all manner of objects on the
screen. Random bad pixels, geometric shapes, and so on. It isn't
like a video card, to have vertical stripes as a failure mode.

You could also try leaving the computer running, and switch off
via the power switch on the monitor, let the monitor cool off.
Then, several hours later, first move the mouse (to get rid of
the screensaver the OS may be using), then turn on the monitor
and see if when the monitor is cold, the lines re-appear.
