video compression

My new XP machine with Powerpoint2003 can't find the
vids:dvsd decompression for my avi files. I don't know
where to go to download the right decompression tools.
The AVI's play fine outside of Powerpoint in windows
media player but cannot be inserted as movie or as a
windows media object due to the vids:dvsd problem. When
imported as a movie, the still picture icon is shown but
the movie is blank. When imported as a windows media
object, an error occurs saying "video not available,
cannot find vids:dvsd decompression"

I assume these AVIs came from your video camera. It uses a proprietary
codec -- one which PPT can't handle.

See if your video camera software allows you to save the video with a
different codec. More common ones are listed at
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm That's in
section 3, but it would be a good idea to read the whole thing.

Also see TAJ's tip re vids:mjpeg decompressors. I don't know that renaming
this file as described in the tip will help, but it may be worth a try.

Thanks, but these same AVI files work fine with
Powerpoint98 and Powerpoint 2000. I supposed that there
must be some codec file that just didn't get installed
with the 2003 version? Surely they would not dumb down
the software??
