Video Card purchase from Newegg.com

N

Newbie

I am wanting to purchase a good video card, but do not want to spend too
much.

I have considered buying from Newegg.com in the OEM barebone section to save
some dollars.

Anyone buy anything in this area of Newegg? If so, what should I expect?

I ordered a mobo, CPU and OS on a Wednesday afternoon (about
2 PM PST) and had delivery of everything by Friday at Noon.
Some arrived on Thursday and the rest on Friday. All was as
advertised and in perfect condition.
New Egg is excellent.

When you ordered your mobo, I take it you got your cables, CD's and other
important stuff, right?

I'm pretty hesitant about ordering an OEM barebone video card because I
don't want to get just the card and have the CD's & cables missing.

I ordered a retail mobo (Intel D845GBVL) and a retail Intel
CPU) since the warranty is different on retail or OEM (white
box) hardware. All cable and drivers on CD come with retail
products, oem probably does not have cables or CDs, you have
to read the specifications down the page to see what comes
with the hardware (or oem software) because there is a
difference in warranty and software supplied.
The basic rule is you get what you pay for and nothing else.
But New Egg accurately describes the item and you have to
decide what you want.

Do you think it's worth buying the OEM barebone card and try to deal with
getting the CD's and cables later?

Often the guarantee on OEM hardware is limited and resolving
some hardware failures may be complicated. After all, OEM
hardware is priced for companies such as the computer shop
that builds a dozen or a few hundred computers a year for
their customers. The shop IS the OEM and responsible for
the warranty. The shop includes the expected cost of
hardware failure into their prices if they intend to stay in
business.

You are going to build ONE computer and the warranty on
retail, plus the customary inclusion on all required
hardware in a retail package makes retail purchased at a
discount a better deal for most customers (my opinion). For
example, a retail mobo will have the installation CD, IDE
and floppy cables AND the correct rear panel insert for the
case. If you buy an oem mobo and the layout of the rear
ports is different from standard you will not be able to
install the mobo until you find and buy the correct parts.

You might consider, if your budget is the issue, a
refurbished retail part. The law does not allow the sale of
returned parts as "new" even though they may be perfect.
The restocking fees you often see are to cover the lost
profit on returned parts.

But only YOU can decide what you will do, where YOU will
spend your money. If you want me to pick your parts, then
you want to PAY me for my professional service. You have
been told about the issues, you can read ALL the terms and
descriptions on the New Egg (or any site) and that is your
job.

The trade-offs, to repeat one last time, the convenience of
retail packaged parts vs. the slightly lower cost of small
purchases of oem parts, the warranty coverage (an important
detail) and the fact that what ever you buy, it will be
obsolete soon after your build it and you'll want a faster,
more powerful graphics card, a new CPU (probably a new mobo
too) and a bigger faster hard drive. If your Dad didn't
tell you, it is cheaper to buy one part and use it up
(applies to cars, marriage, and computers) than to be always
shopping for something new.

If you look at the descriptions for the cards you will see a group of
pictures to the left. These will show you what CDs and other parts come
with the card. Normally all that is needed with a video card is a
driver CD. Some come with cables and adapters for connecting to other
video equipment but you may not need them.
As for the CD, if it is not included newer drivers are available over
the web from the manufacturer. If you are not sure look at what comes
with the retail version and the OEM version and go from there.

Newbie,

My advice is to check out the OEM price of the video card you want, then
look at the RETAIL price for the same card from Newegg. In a lot of
cases, the retail cost on stuff like video cards is usually only a few
dollars more, unless the retail version includes a lot of games or
something. For your peace of mind, dig the change out of your couch
cushions and get the retail version <g> !

RE: Newegg....they are a great mail order company....bought many items
from them over the years. Most recent was a DLink router...ordered on
Tuesday night, 22 Mar; scheduled to arrive Monday 28 Mar; actually
showed up on my doorstep Friday 25 Mar. I guess Fedex didn't want it
sitting around their warehouse over the weekend <g> !
