I want to make a 3-circle venn diagram and be able to convert it to objects
so I can choose colors for each segment --including overlap areas--of the
diagram (not just choose the color for each circle).

You can draw a Venn diagram with PowerPoint 2002 or 2003 (diagram tool).
And you can ungroup it, but not fill the intersections seperately. To do
this, you need to use a ClipArt, where the intersections are drawn as single
objects. You'll find one on Mary Sauer's website:
