vehicle bookings

HI all, I am new to access and I am having trouble getting my head around the
design of a new data base for my work. As usual the bosses do not want to
fork out any money for a product that is on the market. I work for a company
that can have between 20 to 60 vehicles, some of the vehicles could be loan
vehicles from other contractor or hire vehicles. I am trying to make a
booking database where I can enter the date and time booking for a period
from 4 hours to days/ weeks. The main problem is trying to forecast when
additional vehicles are required so ultimatly I am trying to build a database
that I can enter the booking and in the event I do not have enough vehicles I
can suspend the booking until confirmation of additional vehicles. A the same
time the database will have to tell me if I am double booking a vehicle for
any period.

Q 1 is this posible with MS access

Q 2 Can anybody assist/ help

Q 3 Does anybody have a database that will preform this function,

Thankyou

I really hate this type of situation - I will assume you are not a
dedicatted programer or your would develope it in something you know.
Therefore with no experience with access - take your pay rate and multiply
it by 100 (number of hours it is going to take you to learn what you need to
and/or time to finde everyting) do the bosses want to pay that.

The product may be overpriced for what you have described - it is pretty
simple for most access programmers. But there is inherent in this the
ability to track more - more information about the vehicles, who is actually
booking the vehicles, and other business logic that may need to be included
(i.e. is a vehicle out for repair). This will add to your 100 hours.

Yes as I said pretty basic for someone who has the experience.
Q 2 Can anybody assist/ help

Most people can help with specific questions but to do the job for you -
well we are in the business to make some money. So the first thing is to
design the tables - make sure you read about normalization in your book
(havn't bought one? well why not :) ) - make your bosses pay for it, more
added expence. $59 -easily - make sure it has a good section on
normatization, but otherwise make sure your comforatable reading it.

I would be willing to look over what your are desiging and giving you
help now and then (see signature line above) especially on the inital table
design and then checking for double bookings. So if you want to send your
table design off to me I would be willing to look at it. If you send the
actaul MDB file make sure to zip it. chornish AT cap-associates dot com.
Q 3 Does anybody have a database that will preform this function,

Someone probably has something similar but would have to addapt to your
situaion - but again this is work that has value to them.
