V Strange problems

G

Guest

All,

Very strange situation here. We are a win 2000 network and have 2 group
policys setup with no problems.

However when you make the slightest change to the group policy. It deletes /
resets everyones favourites folder??? its quite baffling really but its got
to the stage where I cant make any changes because the hassle after isnt
worth it...

Anyone ever encounter this before? Ive looked through the group policys but
I cant see anything, most are set to non-configured (I know I should set them
to disabled to speed things up but I cant face doing anywork on them)

Adrian,

I would first consider Internet Explorer Branding policies, investigate the
following log file for information
Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\brndlog.txt.

Investigate the following Policy area User Configuration\Windows
Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance\URLs\Favorites and Links. This may
have been configured to remove existing favorites.

Come back to me with what you find for your investigations.

Thanks Dave for your help so far.

I have 2 GPs one for the PC and one for the Users.
Under the PC one I have nothing ticked under User Configuration\Windows
Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance\URLs\Favorites and Links.

Under the User one User Configuration\Windows
Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance\URLs\Favorites and Links. I have the
following ticked
Ticked: Place favourites and links at the top of the list in the order
specified below
Not Ticked: Delete existing Favourites and Links, if present
Not Ticked: Delete existing channels, if present.

Under Favourtites then I have the 4 Company Websites.

For my Brndlog I have the following I will try and post as much as I can,
not sure what you will need. It seems to be clearing the favourites all right
for some reason I dont understand it though

Dave,
I have googled all I could find on this issue, but I still cant resolve it.

Perhaps I should \ could remove this whole section from the group policy all
together if you think that this would fix this current issue.

Even if I had to recreate the whole GP from the beginning could be an option
even.

Any insight at all would be greatly appreciated.

kind regards,
Adrian

Adrian,

From what you describe is configured in the policy I would agree that this
is an unexpected bahaviour. Whilst I do not have an solution at this time to
the why I have an alternative whay of configuring the shortcut's that you
require by adding a logon script to create them. The following script will
create two shortcuts to get you started, copy into a .vbs file:

Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strFavorites = objShell.SpecialFolders("Favorites")
Set objURLSC1 = objShell.CreateShortcut(strFavorites & "\Google.url")
objURLSC1.TargetPath = "http://www.google.com"
objURLSC1.Save
Set objURLSC2 = objShell.CreateShortcut(strFavorites & "\bbc.url")
objURLSC2.TargetPath = "http://www.bbc.co.uk"
objURLSC2.Save

Dave.

Adrian,

Have you investigated the INSTALL.INS file which looks to be the cause of
the problem. Can you confirm if you have used IEAK to create and distribute
IE6 ? The file looks like it may have come from a branding created with the
toolkit.

Dave,
I have googled all I could find on this issue, but I still cant resolve
it.

Perhaps I should \ could remove this whole section from the group policy
all
together if you think that this would fix this current issue.

Even if I had to recreate the whole GP from the beginning could be an
option
even.

Any insight at all would be greatly appreciated.

kind regards,
Adrian

Thanks Dave for your help so far.

I have 2 GPs one for the PC and one for the Users.
Under the PC one I have nothing ticked under User Configuration\Windows
Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance\URLs\Favorites and Links.

Under the User one User Configuration\Windows
Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance\URLs\Favorites and Links. I have
the
following ticked
Ticked: Place favourites and links at the top of the list in the order
specified below
Not Ticked: Delete existing Favourites and Links, if present
Not Ticked: Delete existing channels, if present.

Under Favourtites then I have the 4 Company Websites.

For my Brndlog I have the following I will try and post as much as I can,
not sure what you will need. It seems to be clearing the favourites all
right
for some reason I dont understand it though
