Using XP upgrade CD on OEM system

P

Paul

After upgrading an OEM OS computer (Win9x, ME, etc) to XP
how does one use the XP CD for repairs and other utilities
when prompted to insert your upgraded OS CD??

These OEM boxes typically don't come with a Windows CD,
only a set of "system restore" or "system application"
recovery CDs.

Is there a workaround, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

If you went out and bought an upgrade copy of XP and used that to upgrade from
9x/me to XP that CD can be used to reformat/repair/install.The repair feature
does not delete evrything you've worked on
If you bought a computer with XP installed but received an OEM version of XP it
will do the same thing.
BUT if you bought a system with XP installed and you only received a "recovery"
CD when the time comes that you need to use it ...it will only RESTORE the
system to what it was when you purchased it...no repair.
Just formats the HD(everything gone) and reinstall everything as when you bought
it.
The work around is to bitch till they give what you paid for....an OEM copy of
XP

Thanks Peter for the reply!

Unfortunately it appears I fall into the 3rd scenario you
described (OEM XP Home that needs repair) and I'm trying
to repair it with an old XP Home upgrade CD. Looks like
I'm 'SOL', so to speak.

What are my options, if any? Will Microsoft provide me
with an OEM XP CD if I make some noise.

Note that I'm locked out of the recovery console due to a
phantom admin password that DOES NOT EXIST. (my computer
boots directly to desktop). This has to be a bug.

Thanks again for your help!

If you have an upgrade version of XP you can do anything!!
There is no such thing as an OLD version.I am assuming that you bought a system
that had XP already installed and you are trying to repair something with a
bought version of XP...whether it is an upgrade version or new version or even
an OEM version that came with the system does not matter...so long as it is NOT
a recovery CD.
Try tabbing thru the password to reach the recovery console
What are you endeavering to do....if it boots to the desktop what is the
problem??

Peter,

Sorry for the vagueness. Yes I have a retail upgrade XP
Home CD. (ironically not in use now)

Situation: system won't boot because I put an invalid
value in my boot.ini file. (long story) Now when I try to
boot I get a <windows root>\system32.hal.dll is missing or
corrupt message.

**prior to this, my system used to boot to desktop -- the
admin account is not password protected, yet the recovery
console wants an admin password.

Tabbing thru, or hitting enter after choosing OS doesn't
work but instead gives me an 'invalid password' message.

All I'm trying to do is get to the recovery console to do
a bootcfg/rebuild but since there's a mysterious password
and no prior install to 'repair', the upgrade CD won't
allow me to accomplish this.

When I go the setup route instead of recovery, I never get
the option to repair my in place Windows -- only the
option to clean install, partition, format, etc...

Thanks again for your help!

Set the BIOS to boot from the CD as the first device. Boot
the CD, and select the recovery console "r" and that will
load the console.
