Using "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" to new XP-Pro PC??

I am wondering if the File and Settings Transfer Wizard must be used
immediately after installing XP-Pro on a new PC in order to move stuff
over from the old one? That is, must the target machine be fully
pristine with no already established settings of its own?

I have a laptop that I am moving in to and I have spent a few days
setting up my development environment on the new laptop while using
the old normally.
Now I realize that if I use the File and Settings Transfer Wizard then
I might overwrite stuff I have already set up on the new laptop and so
I am reluctant to do it. I don't want to wind up with zapping all the
work I spent the last days to set up all my programs for example.

Is there a risk this will happen?

Another issue:
I am using FireFox as browser and I wonder if the transfer wizard will
include my FireFox settings as well?
And what about my connections? I have a ton of those with various
phone numbers and passwords, will they also come over?

Any clues?

Oh Yes there is a risk alright, just like the offline files
synchronisation wizard one iota of confusion and it can go horribly
wrong. Its a nice idea but in reality it does not save you an awful
lot of time as it only does selected MS files.

The File & Transfer Wizard asks what you wish to transfer so if use it
on the things it handles that you have not set up yet it should be OK
otherwise don't bother. Personally I always do it the hard way from
scratch and if I was ever to use the F&T wizard it would be on a clean
machine and hell would be frozen solid.
Another issue:

include my FireFox settings as well?

No but it will transfer IE favorites which you can then import into a
new install of FF, or you can copy the FF Bookmarks folder from the
source machine and paste the contents into the same folder on the
target machine. You can just copy over your IE favourites folder in
the same way so there is no need for the transfer wizard.
And what about my connections? I have a ton of those with various

Connections? do you mean the OE address book? This one can allegedly
be done with the File and Transfer wizard you can try it, I dunno I
never use OE. Transferring contact info for almost any other e mail
client is a doddle, for OE or Outlook it is not so straight-forward.
There is a lot of software about usually shareware to do the job for
you, its not easy to do it manually. I use a utility called Backrex
for the purpose because it takes the pain out of the process.

Backrex is shareware, its OK but there are probably better ones see if
you can find a demo version.
Any clues?

No, certainly not. I am not using OE at all.
What I mean is the connections I have set up for dialup communications
via the modem. I have between 50 and 100 such items and It will be
very tedious to enter them all again....
