Use outlook 2007 without exchange server.

Every problem that I come across seems to boil down to the fact that I am not
connected to an exchange server (and I don't wanna be). Is there a quick way
to fix this?

Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook]

Yes.

Of course other than using the exchange server.

You first - provide details on what problems you are having.

No one could possibly decipher what you are talking about without a problem description. "Every problem that I come across..."

We are not clairavoyalant, you know.

I guess that my main problem is that when I attempt to do a mail merge in
word using the step wizard, at step 3 I get "Unable to obtain list of tables
from the data source.". Then when I try to start from outlook through tools,
mail-merge, existing document, I can't find the templates so I use a docx of
the template and I can't change any of the contact fields because the toolbar
for doing that is greyed out, so I try to use it as it is but the
unchangeable fields don't match ( full_name versus first_name, last_name) so
I try to go back and split the full name field into first name lastname
fields but outlook won't let me etc.

M

Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook]

I don't use mail merges often enough to be fluently conversant with the process but you can start here:

If you have additional questions, feel free to follow-up with specific problems.

Thanks Milly Staples but I have tried that step through and always dead end.
I should start at the beginning. I don't seem to have any address books that
are connected with anything in the new outlook program. They show up in
contacts though. If I try to send an email by clicking New, and then Mail
Message, this opens the Untitled - Message (HTML) window. When I click on
"To" I get the Select Names window and there are no Address books in the drop
down list to choose from. I have always assumed that this is because I didn't
buy or sign up for "exchange server" and have been trying to make outlook
2007 work from my machine like earlier outlooks worked. What am I missing?

Is your Outlook Address Book service installed and configured correctly? Check Tools->Options->Mail Setup tab->E-mail Accounts. Check the last tab to ensure the service is installed. If not, then add it, close and restart Outlook.

Also, ensure that each of your contact folders are marked as an Outlook Address Book - Right click->Options.

Yes it says Outlook Address Book under Name and MAPI under TYPE. Note that

I'm sorry I missed your second paragraph. None of them are currently outlook
address books and the "show this as an outlook address books" option is
greyed out on all of them. I have gone through the step by steps attempting
to add a new address book but it tells me that another cannot be created and
when I attempt to remove it, it is greyed out?

I recently upgraded to Outlook 2007 from 2003 and I have been searching
forums looking for the same issues I am having. My contacts show up when I
click the contacts folder but they do not show up in the address book. I
followed all of the instructions here and I have all of the same results:
grayed out boxes on the properties tab of the contact folder when trying to
add contacts as an address book, etc.

I have also read that creating a new profile will so the trick but I tried
that, imported my PAB and they showed up in the contacts folder but not in
the address book and none of my email accounts or previous emails came over.

Is there some known flaw with 2007 that can be hotfixed?

Any help is greatly appreciated, and I am sorry to jump in on your post
dannyb.

| Yes it says Outlook Address Book under Name and MAPI under TYPE. Note

I suspect you didn't correctly connect your old data file to your new mail
profile. State the exact steps you took to create your new mail profile and
connect it to your old data file.

Thank you for replying Mr. Tillman. Outlook 2007 performed the upgrade
install automatically without any intervention from me. The Outlook address
book shows up in the "Tools" "Account Settings" window under the "Address
Book" tab. The remove "X" is grayed out and when I try to add another
"Outlook Address Book" it won't let me saying I already have one.

I have also tried to right-click on the "Contacts" folder and then try to
enable it as an address book but the box there is also grayed out.

If I click on the "Address Book" icon and type in a name and search it says
"The search cannot be completed you must have an address list to search
in...."

I also went to Control Panel and click on Mail and saw I had three profiles
already,
"Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings" which is what I am using,
"Outlook" and "Reinstall".

When I clicked on Outlook it went through the wizard the next time I opened
Outlook and asked me to import my account, which I did, but I still had the
same results and unfortunately, it didn't import any of my dozen or so email
accounts.

Perhaps I just missed something easy?

Outlook 2007 does not create a good mail profile at its installation. You
need to create a new one. I assumed you had, since you said, "I followed
all of the instructions here." The instructions posted here nearly every
day state that you need to create a new mail profile. See this:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/newprofile.htm . Next time, don't hijack
someone else's thread. Start your own.

Thanks for the help, but no need to get nasty though. I did apologize to
dannyb for jumping onto his thread.
