Can I use my laptop (WinXP SP3) simply as a monitor for a desktop PC (also
WinXP SP3) ?
If so, what connections are necesary?

No. Not in the way you probably are thinking and not natively by any means.

Now - you can use software to sort-of make this happen.

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Example, searching for:
use laptop as monitor
http://www.google.com/search?q=use+laptop+as+monitor

Could have found you the above page. ;-)

If you want to use the laptop to control the desktop,
a Remote Desktop Connection seems t he simplest
route. If both have wireless cards, you can just sit
on the living room couch and control the office desktop.
