USB's Not working

Hi, None of my USB's are working on my laptop - I have tried several devices
which work perfectly on my PC.
I have tried removing the entries in USB Controllers in Device Manager, but
it hangs (Task Manager shows "Not Responding" and my CPU usage goes to 100%)
and nothing else is running - I've even looked in the BIOS to see if there is
a setting to switch them off so they will re-install, but there is nothing
apparent. My Laptop is an Acer TravelMate 4050 - Any help would be
gratefully received. Thank you in advance.

Start>Run>type DEVMGMT.MSC and press OK
Scroll to the bottom to uninstall USB controllers by rightclicking them.
Reboot and Windows will install the USB controllers automatically.
Make sure that none of the USB ports are checked as disabled.

Thank you for your reply, and I have tried that, this is when it was hanging
and did not remove them - they were all enabled, however, by selecting view -
show hidden devices (suggestion of J.Mills on another question) they then did
remove. They have now automatically re-installed but are still not working -
any other suggestions?
