USB problems?

I recently experienced problems with the software for my Dell AIO 966
printer. On advice from the Dell NG's, I uninstalled all of my USB
controllers, and rebooted in the expectation that Windows would detect and
reinstall them.

To a point, this was successful, but now whenever I boot my system, I get
the windows "New hardware found"dialogue. Any, and I do mean ANY, mouse
clicks in the dialog area at this point result in my mouse and keyboard
being totally frozen.

Device Manager reports all the usual stuff, along with 2 "Unknown Device"
entries.

The only way I can boot my system now is to wait for the Hardware found
diaalog, R-Click the taskbar, and kill the dialog from Task Manager. I
usually have to kill it 3 times, at which point all is well.

I've replaced the Dell printer that started this nonsense with an Epson
Workforce 500, and have no printer problems.

I'm obviously way over my head here folks. Any suggestions?

Thanx,

Buddha

Reinstall the drivers for your motherboard. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

Buddha,

Are you able to get to the Device Manager without using the mouse?

* Press the Windows key on your keyboard, use the up, right & Enter keys to
scroll to the Control Panel > Device Manager.

* Once you are in Device Manager press the TAB key once and the down arrow
key to scroll down to any 'unknown' devices, press Enter key then the TAB
key until it highlight's the 'General' tab

* Now use the right arrow key to scroll to the 'Details' tab, press the TAB
key to highlight 'Device Description' under 'Property'.

* Continually press the down arrow to scroll through all the properties, you
may see a clue in one of them to figure out which controller is not
installing.

For example, scrolling to 'Compatible IDs' may give a code such as
'USB\MOTOCCGPGOODHCD'. This is a Motorola ID and I only have one Motorola
device on my PC, my cell phone driver.
Anyway, worth a shot if the motherboard option doesn't work.

HI,
You didn't say if your mouse was USB.
I would suggest re-booting in safe mode, opening device manager and deleting all unknown devices and mice.
Shut down the computer, don't restart it.
Unplug the mouse and any other USB devices.
Restart the computer, wait for it to finish the boot cycle, then start plugging in the devices. One at a time.
