Usb printer not recognized

Hello all
After installing XP-PRO, upgraded to SP1 I'm unable to install and use a Canon Smartbase MPC190. The installation disk coming with the printer with the xp drivers starts and suddenly says "server threw an error". No messages are recorded in event/system. Any hint

Uninstall and reinstall...... completely
