USB HDD not visible

I have an old Toshiba HDD (HDD2412 MK2326FC). I've connected this to
the PC (windowsXP prof) using a USB IDE adaptor (which works ok with
other HDDs). The drive shows up in device manager (both in USB and
storage) but disk manager can't find it. Device manager shows the
device as unreadable.

I've tried various combinations of master/slave on the HDD but no luck.
The disk did work ok before but no other way of checking it now.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Jay.

A USB external drive should be jumpered as a master, partitioned and
formatted before it will become usable.. right click 'My Computer' and
select 'Manage'.. you will be taken to the Disk Management window where you
will be able to partition and format the drive..
