usb hard drive enclosure?

I am starting to see hardware described as "USB HARD DRIVE ENCLOSURE".
Would this product have the ability to contain a IDE Hard Drive and
connect to the USB port of a Windows XP computer? If so, where would
the IDE drive obtain it's power.

As Spoon 2001 says they come with their own power supply. When I bought mine
I shopped purely on price and as a result got a very noisy enclosure. It is
a plastic box which contains a cooling fan that was probably salvaged from
one of Concorde's engines ! I am fairly sure you can get enclosures of an
all metal construction that use conduction for cooling instead of an air
blast.

I use mine for 100% back up of my computer and it only has to run for about
25 minutes each time so I can live with the extra noise and there is no
chance of leaving it running when it is not needed :)

Richard.

Dear Richard & Spoon: thank's for your quick informative replies! I
notice that USB Hard Drive Enclosures for 2.5 in drives cost less than
ones for 3.5 in. drives, but that 2.5 in. drives cost considerably
more than 3.5 in drives. I guess everything in life is a tradeoff.

Dear Richard & Spoon:

PS to my previous post! As it turns out, I did not purchase a
separate hard drive enclosure and a separate IDE drive. When I went
to Fry's in Burbank, CA last week they sold me an Iomega 160 Gig
External USB drive for a total cost of $99 excluding tax, after
receiving $50. of rebates that will be mailed to me in 8 weeks. I
know its a little extra hassle mailing in rebate forms, but this
seemed to be the better path for my needs. Thank's again for your
input!
best, Aaron
