Hi, my computer is using XP professional, after I plug in removable
hard disk (IBM's travelstar and XS Drive II) on USB port, sometimes it
show unknow device, sometimes it recognize it and shows in device
manager, but I can't never see the hard disk in my computer, so I can
never use it. I tried reinstall XP prof and also tried intel USB 2.0
drivers, in device manager I see 4 host controller and 4 root hubs all
fine (no error mark), but just can't see the USB drive... is it
hardware problem or driver?

any help/hint greatly appreciated!

There is a Windows bug where if you have a networked drive mapped to a
low drive letter, Windows does not recognize that it is there when it
assigns a drive letter to your USB drive (it assigns it to the same
letter). The workaround is to either remap the networked drive to a
high letter or use Disk Manager
Right-Click "My Computer"->Manage->Storage->Disk Management
to re-map your USB drive to an unused letter.

See:
"New drive or mapped network drive not available in Windows Explorer"

Do you have connected the drive directely or with
an extension cable in between? Cheap extension cables
often cause such variable problems.

What do you see in the disk management (Start -> Run ->
diskmgmt.msc)? There should be the harddisk and the three
card slots.

i see only 2 disk (internal) and 2 CD drives, the portable USB drives
have no problem because I can use them fine on other computers.

<in device manager I see 4 host controller and 4 root hubs>
Depending on the motherboard this tells me that the latest
chipset drivers are not installed.

no, I don't think the USB ever worked on this computer, don't have
other devices to try USB before
