USB Gamepads un-detect, or never detect in XP Pro

I have tried 3 seperate gamepads for use with FFXI Online. First, FFXI has run flawlessly in XP Pro as it said it would, Second, it supports ALL gamepads, even those with vibration. 3rd....When Win XP-Pro DECIDES to detect and stay connected to my USB gamepad all is as it should be. However, I cannot convince XP-Pro to do this. I have made sure all manufacturer drivers are up to date, all Wix-XP-Pro updates are current, switched manufacterer's usb gamepads 3 times, been online with several technicians to try to help out.....all to no avail. I have downloaded the windows KB hotfix for this specific problem and modified the registry keys as illustrated at Microsoft support....it is still a 85% chance windows will either not detect the gamepad or tells me it is an "unknown USB device", or it knows what it is but informs me the "-device cannot start..." Or...and this is the one that really burns me up; detects it just fine, and sometime within 30 minutes it quits working...I back out of the game, online shell, and control panel informs me sunnily that all is well and it's working just fine, only it's not. What the heck is going on? I have disabled all powerdowns for these usb ports, so I know it's NOT going into standby or idle mode. What can I do to fix this? I am at my wits end (as evidenced by my ranting above). Can someone please help me get a gamepad to work with Win XP Pro??? Arrrrggghhhhh.

Hi FFXIaddict,

I don't know why you're experiencing so many problems, and had to go through
so many steps with all those techs. :*( I installed a gamepad I recently bought
(it's a Saitek P880) model and had no problems at all.

The gamepad came with software on CD which I installed before plugging it in.
After I installed the software and rebooted, I plugged in the gamepad and it was
instantly recognized and installed.

Perhaps you should try a gamepad that has XP compatible installation software,
and if that fails, repair windows, and verify that your USB ports aren't defective.

How To Repair Windows:
Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows:
using this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Test your gamepad before continuing any further.

Afterwards, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall,
plug back into your Internet connection and install all Critical and
