USB External Hard Drive

I have Win XP OS, have installed a new Maxtor External Hard Drive via USB.
The System picked up the Maxtor Hard and indicates ready for use. However, in
"My Computer", the Hard Disk Drive is not shown. How do I "Find" the External
Hard Drive to format? Currently it is not formatted.
