USB 2.0 PCI card problem?????

ko

Hi all,

Recently I bought an internal Hard drive (maxtor 250GB) to put in my
external HD case from techsolo, to connect to my newly bought USB 2.0
pci card from edimax. But when I am trying to format my partitions in
NTFS the process fails.

To rule out some possible problems I tried the following:

1. I put my HD in my PC as an internal drive. Partitioning succeeded
and I could read/write data. This rules out that my BIOS is not up to
date and supports the big drive and the drive is not broken.

2. When I connect the external drive to my notebook it also works
fine. Copying 700MB in several seconds.

3. When I connect my external drive to the USB 1.0 port of my
motherboard in my PC it also works fine. The partitions are read
successfully. Copying data takes a very long time :-( .

4. Connecting my USB 1.0 stick to the usb 2.0 card also works fine.

I am running XP pro SP1 on an athlon 1600+ XP .

Can anybody help me.

Thanks in advance,
KO

IMO there's some really crappy USB2 stuff out there. I don't
recognize "idemax" as a brand.

I bought a no-name 5-port USB pci card for my big desktop machine and
it's flakey. It cost about $12 so I'm living with it for now. (I hate
loose cords and hubs and power warts so I run all my little USB
devices right to the PC. It eliminates lots of clutter.)

I got a service call from someone who just bought a nice HP color
laser that was printing garbage on one PC. The final conclusion what
this PC (Big Name, 15 months old) had a southbridge chip (?) that had
a known problem with USB2 devices. The Intel, HP, and manufacturer's
websites all confirmed this. A name brand USB2 card for $35 fixed it.

I have a TechSolo TMR-3550 External aluminium HDD-Case with an 120GB
Maxtor harddisk and have the problem described in the FAQ below when I
try to use it connected to a Sweex USB 2.0 PCMCIA Card (which has a NEC
chip) inserted in my Toshiba 2710 DXDVD laptop running Windows 98SE.
Both the TechSolo HDD-Case and Sweex PCMCIA Card work properly with
different hardware.

Don't know this has anything to do with your problem but saved below
remark from the TechSolo website.

TMR-3510
In the current revision this HDD box is not compatible to Samsung HDDs
of the Spinpoint series, as well as NEC USB extension cards. Mainboards
with a NForce 2 chipset have to be set to USB 1.1 mode to get them work.

As was mentioned in your previous thread on this issue. Yes, you should try
a different brand of card.

It seems that many people have problems when they install their own drive
into an external USB2 case. Yet, if I connect my Seagate external hard drive
to the same computer it will work fine. I guess you really do get what you
pay for!

Hi Kerry,

You were right! I bought a sweex usb 2.0 card and..... so far so good.
And concerning the techsolo case; I recieved an email:

Hallo!
Currently we are experiencing troubles with maxtor 8 MB cache HDDs, i
guess 16MB cache HDDs are also involved.
It may work, but we don't know how stable it'll be.
We are working on the problem.

I will probably switch to a case of sweex as well.

Kerry, you have been of great help.

All the best to you!
Greetings,
KO.
