Upgrading Windows XP Pro To Vista When The Day Arrives

D

D. Spencer Hines

Millions of folks are now using OEM versions of Windows XP.

When they eventually want to upgrade to Vista will they be able to buy a
commercial upgrade and then be able to port the Vista install to a NEW
computer when the first one craters?

We'll have to wait to see how the EULA reads when it's released, but it's a
reasonable expectation that the rules will be the same as they are now. If
so, the answer will be yes.

Thank You.

So, am I understanding you correctly?

Under the current ROE, because we are talking WAR here not just EULA's --
WAR Against Software Pirates -- Which Has Turned Into Cruel & Unusual
Punishment for Millions of Honest Folks -- users will be able to upgrade an
OEM copy of Windows XP with a commercial upgrade and then easily and legally
port the new COMPLETE install of Vista to a NEW computer -- as long as they
remove it from the OLD one or cannot because the computer has cratered and
they cannot use it anymore?

No, I didn't say that. I said that I don't know what the rules will be. What
the rules will be haven't been announced yet.

I also said that it's a reasonable expectation that the rules will be the
same as they are now.

Nope, you misunderstood what I wrote.

I said under the current ROE -- no change.

That's called a HYPOTHESIS.

It is the Same HYPOTHESIS you made yourself.

I quote you to yourself:

How strange, the English language can be re-

to mean some thing else by so many people.

New Hypothesis:

Honest Citizen buys new computer with OEM Windows XP Pro installed.

She upgrades it to SP1, then to SP2 in 2005 and to SP3 in 2006.

She also installs many other bits and pieces of software from Microsoft and
other vendors and is smart enough to back up her entire hard disk with the
Windows XP Backup Program.

In June 2007 her computer goes belly up and is thenceforth only useful as a
door stop.

1. Will she be able to reinstall everything from her Windows XP backup,
including the OS, to a new computer in July 2007?

2. Will she be able to buy a COMMERCIAL upgrade version of Vista and
install it on said new computer?

If not, she is hosed.

Get a new OEM vista with a harware such as a cable. (you can do that).
The oem will cost as much as the upgrade.

Problem solved.

As you like to mince words, here is something for you..

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

Mince away, and quit trolling..

It's always amusing to see people who are stumped and discombobulated cry:

"Troll!"

When they find themselves _in extremis_.

They seem to think "Troll!" is some sort of talisman that will ward off Evil
Spirits.

How Abysmally Ignorant Of Them.

No. OEM versions of Windows have a unique license
that is permentantly tied to the first computer it is installed
and activated on. Besides, upgrading means the new license
incorpoartes the orignal license used for the upgrade.

Q.==> Can I sell or give away old versions of my software when I acquire an upgrade?

A.==> No. Because the original full version software and the upgrade version software
together are a single software program, you will need to retain the prior version in order
to establish your eligibility for the upgrade license.

Thank you.

But we seem to have some conflicting advice here.

My question had nothing to do with giving away or selling the old versions
of the MS software -- just using it on a new SINGLE computer when the first
one becomes a very expensive doorstop.

And do you know about this town
Here is a little info. (web related)
http://www.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.com/

I visited there in 2004. It is a pleasant little place on the Isle of
Anglesea. Tourist oriented, of course.
We visited on a coach tour of Britain.

Here is a reference to a picture I took of the railway satation

As has been pointed out here before, the correct term for you is
"patronizing troll". We understand you have been accused of the same in
many other newsgroups.

"Troll!"

Or some equally silly variant...

When they find themselves _in extremis_.

They seem to think "Troll!" is some sort of talisman that will ward off
Evil Spirits.

I learned to sail and gotten my RYA 1 &2 and Navigation in Holyhead many
years ago.. did my navigation with Sgt Bill Tack on the Cliperau at the
Scimitar Sailing School.. I know the area very well, having lived in
Machynlleth for a while, and having a Welsh mother and grandmother..

Funny, I was thinking of things I miss about the UK.. this has reminded me
of just a few more events in my life..

There is another fellow here who is not so sure about that -- if you upgrade
with a commercial upgrade.

You and he ought to talk.

It is not a question of being stumped so much as no desire to get into a war
of words with somebody who is determined to antagonise..

D

Not in the least!

I simply don't have any penchant for reading BS.

Most folks here don't post it -- just a few.

Some are obviously quite confused as to what is allowed and not with a copy
of Windows XP.
